✨ My Healing Journey: Learning to Choose Myself

For years, I felt trapped in an unhealthy relationship with my mom—forced to take on responsibilities that broke me down. I overdosed, went through therapy, and still struggle daily. My cat and music are my biggest comforts, and I’m learning to heal little by little.

✨ If I don’t do what she asks, she punishes me. Sometimes she refuses to let me eat because I’m under her food share. I go hungry while she uses control to break me down.

✨ There are times my mom or my aunties use violence against me. I cry at night, wishing I could escape and finally live free from this cycle.

✨ I live with a learning disability and rely on SSI, which makes independence harder. I cope through music—it’s the only way I can quiet my mind.

I’m sharing my story because I know I’m not alone. Healing is messy, but I’m choosing myself every day. 💜

... Read moreHealing from an abusive relationship, especially one involving family members like a parent or aunties, is a complex and ongoing process that requires immense courage and support. Survivors may face challenges such as emotional control, physical violence, and neglect—including denial of basic needs—that deeply impact their mental and physical well-being. Experiencing trauma of this nature can lead to difficulties managing daily life, especially when compounded by additional factors such as learning disabilities and reliance on social support systems like SSI. One effective coping mechanism highlighted is the use of music as a therapeutic outlet. Music can serve to calm the mind, reduce anxiety, and provide emotional expression when words fail. Professional therapy remains an essential part of trauma recovery, helping individuals process painful experiences, develop healthy boundaries, and build self-esteem. It's important for survivors to remember that healing is not linear; it comes with setbacks and breakthroughs. Building a support network that understands mental health challenges and trauma recovery is critical. This can include mental health professionals, trusted friends, support groups, and communities dedicated to healing and self-love. Incrementally learning to prioritize one's needs, practicing self-compassion, and affirming personal worth are key steps in breaking cycles of abuse. Moreover, advocacy for awareness about mental health and trauma can empower others facing similar situations and reduce stigma. Platforms sharing authentic healing stories contribute to a collective environment of hope and resilience. Choosing oneself amid such struggles embodies strength and the pursuit of peace, freedom, and love, signaling a profound step toward reclaiming autonomy and well-being.
