It’s been a minute…

It's always a thrill to embark on a new commission, especially when it involves such a magnificent creature as an eagle. This particular piece, a detailed pencil drawing of an eagle in flight, is definitely one of my most ambitious work in progress pieces yet. I wanted to share a bit about the journey behind creating such an artwork, from the initial concept right through to capturing those intricate feathers and sharp features that make these birds so captivating. One of the biggest challenges in drawing an eagle is truly understanding its anatomy, especially when it's depicted in flight. Every feather needs to be placed just right to convey movement and power. I spend a lot of time studying reference photos to get the wing structure accurate, as well as the powerful talons and piercing gaze. Getting the perspective right for an eagle soaring through the air on white paper requires careful planning and multiple light sketches before committing to the darker graphite. It's a layer-by-layer process, slowly building up the form and texture. For a detailed pencil drawing, patience is key. I use a range of graphite pencils, from harder leads for initial outlines and fine details, to softer, darker leads for deep shadows and richer tones. Achieving the texture of individual feathers, especially on the head and wings, involves a lot of delicate strokes and blending. I often layer tones to create depth, making sure each feather stands out without looking too rigid. The goal is to make it look alive, almost as if it could take off from the page. Being a work in progress on a commission means a constant dialogue with the client. It’s exciting to get their feedback and ensure the vision aligns. Sometimes, they have specific details they want highlighted, like a certain intensity in the eagle’s eye or the spread of a particular feather. These interactions really shape the final piece and make it unique. It's not just about drawing; it's about translating an idea into a visual story that resonates with someone else. Finding the right reference images is crucial for any artist, but especially for wildlife. You need high-resolution photos that show the eagle from various angles, capturing its musculature, feather patterns, and typical postures. While it might be fun to look at an eagle meme for a laugh, for a serious detailed pencil drawing, I rely on professional wildlife photography. This ensures anatomical accuracy and helps me capture the true majesty and spirit of the bird. I’m really enjoying the process of bringing this powerful creature to life with just graphite and paper!
