When you are a BEGINNER beginner, even getting into the gym can feel overwhelming.

I also think a big part of the anxiety is the fact that we except ourselves to just magically know our way around this mystical building in the same way gym veterans do.

Fear of judgement and being seen also comes into play, ofc

So when I get clients with this deep gym anxiety, I like to take an “exposure therapy” route.

Baby steps.

Start by literally just walking in, or using the sauna.

Then do some cardio.

Scope out the place, find a quiet corner.

Do some body weight squats.

Little by little build your emotional tolerance to being in the gym.

Every step is a win, and before you know it you’ll be a full scale Gym Baddie craving to move your body 💕

The crucial thing I learned is to be patient with yourself and embrace small wins. For instance, beginning with just walking on the treadmill for a few minutes can feel surprisingly empowering. It’s familiar and low-pressure, making it easier to get comfortable. Also, finding a quiet corner or lesser-used space in the gym helped me avoid that feeling of being judged or watched. It gave me the breathing room to try simple bodyweight exercises like squats without any stress. Using the sauna or spending a little time just acclimating to the environment also eased my anxiety. Another tip is to give yourself realistic expectations. You don’t need to jump into intense workouts immediately—building emotional tolerance to the gym atmosphere is just as important. It's perfectly okay to go at your own pace and gradually add more activities once the anxiety starts to dissipate. Remember, every visit counts—even just walking in is a victory. Over time, these baby steps stack up, and before you know it, you’ll feel like a gym baddie eager to move your body confidently. Consistency, patience, and kindness toward yourself are key elements that made my gym experience much more enjoyable and less daunting.
