The inclusion of zero trust between characters really elevates the tension, keeping you guessing about everyone's true intentions. Annalie’s discovery of her stepmother’s sinister green skin and illusion magic adds a chilling supernatural layer reminiscent of the Wicked musical and movie, but with its own unique flair. What I appreciated most was how the story challenges the typical good versus evil trope. The unexpected twists encourage you to think about how appearances can be deceiving, and how even people perceived as villains may have hidden motives. This moral ambiguity makes the story more realistic and engaging. The magic system is intriguing and well-integrated into the plot, especially the way Annalie’s newfound powers reveal clues about her stepmother’s past crimes. It creates a sense of urgency and suspense as she races against time to uncover a pattern of murders. If you enjoy YA fantasy with strong female perspectives and a dark, magical atmosphere, this book is definitely worth picking up. Plus, the narrative promises that while you can’t rewrite the stars, the story itself is ready to be rewritten in exciting ways. It kept me hooked until the last page and I look forward to more tales from this universe.
