Welcome to my Green House Era 🌿

There’s something so special about slowing down, getting your hands in the soil, and watching something you planted grow. I’m starting my little greenhouse journey from the ground up—and I can’t wait to see what comes from it. 🌿🍅🥒

A little reminder that you don’t need a huge backyard or a perfect setup to start growing. Start small, learn as you go, and enjoy the process. 🤍

Here’s to growing more, slowing down, and creating something beautiful from the ground up. 🌱

🌱 How to Set Up a Greenhouse

1. Pick the right location

* Choose a spot with 6–8 hours of sunlight per day.

* A south or southeast-facing location is generally ideal.

* Avoid areas where trees or buildings heavily shade the greenhouse.

* Make sure the area has good drainage and isn’t prone to flooding.

2. Prepare the ground

* Level the area before assembling anything.

* You can place the greenhouse on soil, gravel, pavers, or a foundation.

* For a permanent greenhouse, a solid foundation is best.

* Make sure water can drain away from the structure.

3. Assemble the frame

* Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

* Secure the frame firmly to the ground—wind can move or damage a greenhouse surprisingly easily.

* Check that everything is level before attaching the covering.

4. Install the covering

Depending on your greenhouse, this may be:

* Polycarbonate panels

* Glass

* Plastic greenhouse film

Make sure the covering is properly secured so wind and rain can’t get underneath it.

5. Add ventilation 🌬️

This is really important. Greenhouses can get extremely hot.

* Install roof vents or side vents.

* Add a small fan if necessary.

* Automatic vent openers are great if you don’t want to constantly monitor temperatures.

6. Set up your growing space

You can use:

* 🌿 Raised beds

* 🪴 Pots and grow bags

* 🧺 Shelving

* 🌱 Seed-starting trays

Keep taller plants toward the back/north side so they don’t shade smaller plants.

7. Add watering

For a small greenhouse, a watering can or hose may be enough. For a larger setup, consider:

* Drip irrigation

* Soaker hoses

* Automatic timers

8. Monitor temperature & humidity

Get an inexpensive thermometer/hygrometer. You’ll want to know what’s happening inside, especially during summer and cold nights.

9. Start with easy plants

Great beginner choices include:

* Tomatoes 🍅

* Peppers 🌶️

* Cucumbers 🥒

* Lettuce 🥬

* Herbs 🌿

* Strawberries 🍓

* Flowers 🌸

10. Plan for winter

If you’re in a cold climate, you’ll need to decide whether you’re using the greenhouse only during the growing season or keeping it productive through winter. Insulation, supplemental heat, and winter-hardy crops may be necessary.

Beginner tip: Don’t fill the greenhouse immediately. Start with a few plants, learn how quickly it heats up/cools down, and adjust your ventilation and watering routine before expanding. 🌱

... Read moreWhen I first began my greenhouse journey, I was both excited and a bit overwhelmed by all the details to consider. One of the biggest lessons I learned early on was the importance of monitoring temperature and humidity regularly. I used a simple, inexpensive thermometer and hygrometer and placed them in different spots inside the greenhouse to get a better sense of microclimates. This helped me decide when to adjust ventilation or add shading during hot summer days. Choosing easy-to-grow plants like tomatoes, cucumbers, and herbs made it easier for me to build confidence. I started with just a few pots and raised beds rather than filling the entire greenhouse at once. This approach gave me time to understand how quickly the greenhouse heats up or cools down and how much watering each plant needs. Using drip irrigation later saved me a lot of time and kept plants healthy without overwatering. Another tip that made a big difference was positioning taller plants toward the north or back side, avoiding shading smaller plants, which improved overall growth. Also, installing automatic vent openers relieved me from constantly having to check the temperature, creating a stable environment without much daily effort. Finally, planning ahead for winter conditions helped maintain productivity during colder months. Adding insulation and supplemental heat allowed me to keep some crops growing year-round. For anyone starting a greenhouse from scratch, my advice is to take it slow, enjoy the process, and learn as you go. This hands-on experience not only nurtures your plants but also brings a rewarding sense of connection to nature.
