Finding content in your target language

it’s not a secret in 2025 that our phones listen to about everything that we say and do. I feel like simply by listening to your target language on or around your phone, you can start to get more content in that language.

• comprehensible input - this is typically a native speaker who speaks slower, depending on your level and talks about every day things so learners can absorb words they will actually use.

recommendations: Comprehensible French Input, Piece of French

• changing my language on social media - I have really only done this for TikTok, but since I changed my language, I noticed that I get a lot more French videos.

• watching more films in my target language - this one seems like an obvious, but I feel as if you can learn a lot about the pop culture references in your target language this way as well.

• only interacting with content in my target language - this extends to only TikTok, but I feel as if this has helped the algorithm to push more French content to me.

• listening to podcasts - depending on your level, I feel like podcasts are a great way to listen and find patterns within how native speakers talk. it’s also really good to do shadowing during this time and try to repeat what the native speaker is saying in the same tone they did.

recommendations - Little Slow Talk in French, L’heure de Monde, Coffee Break French

• speaking my target language - as I said in the beginning, our phones definitely are listening to everything we are saying and doing, I feel like speaking in your target language is not only helpful practice but can also help your phone to push more content.

... Read moreBuilding on the fantastic methods already shared, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into how I truly make these strategies work for me, especially when it comes to finding that perfect content in my target language. It’s one thing to know you should watch films, but another to consistently find engaging material that actually helps you learn! One of the biggest game-changers for me has been truly understanding and implementing comprehensible input. It’s not just about finding slower native speakers; it’s about content that is just above your current level, challenging but not overwhelming. For me, this often looks like dedicated YouTube channels from language teachers who explain things clearly, or podcasts specifically designed for learners. Don’t be afraid to start with content aimed at children – their shows often have clear dialogue and visual cues that help immensely. I also use subtitles in my target language first, then switch to none once comfortable. This method of finding content in my target language has been crucial for building vocabulary naturally. When it comes to changing social media language settings, I’ve pushed this concept even further than just TikTok. On Instagram, I actively seek out and follow French creators – artists, chefs, travel bloggers, even meme accounts! The more I engage with their content (liking, commenting *in French*, saving posts), the more the algorithm understands I want more of that. The same goes for YouTube. Instead of just searching for "French lessons," I search for topics I genuinely enjoy, like "recette facile" or "voyage France," and subscribe to channels that speak mostly in French. It’s amazing how quickly your feed transforms once you start actively "teaching" the algorithm what you want. These methods for finding content truly make a difference in turning passive scrolling into active learning. Beyond just watching films, I’ve found that consuming entire TV series in my target language on platforms like Netflix or Hulu is incredibly effective. The continuity of characters and storylines helps you get used to different accents and speaking styles. If a show has multiple seasons, you get hours of consistent exposure. Sometimes, a VPN can be useful for accessing region-locked content. I also try to find documentaries on topics I'm already interested in; learning about something new while also practicing French feels like a double win! Podcasts are fantastic. To really maximize them, I try to find those that offer transcripts. It allows me to listen actively, then read along to catch anything I missed, and even do some "shadowing" – repeating what the speaker says, trying to match their tone and rhythm. This active repetition has seriously improved my pronunciation and fluency. I always recommend finding podcasts that align with your hobbies; if you love true crime, find a French true crime podcast! It keeps you engaged. Finally, let's talk about speaking and reading. While my phone might be "listening" when I practice speaking, actively seeking out conversation partners through apps like HelloTalk or Tandem has been invaluable. Even just talking to myself in French about my day helps solidify new vocabulary. And for reading, I started with graded readers – books specifically written for language learners. Now, I try to read short news articles or blog posts in French every day. It’s another excellent way of finding content in my target language that builds vocabulary and grammar understanding in a practical context. Integrating these varied methods ensures a rich, consistent, and enjoyable immersion experience.
