Learn a language in 90 days watching Netflix ?!

📺 The challenge: 📺

How much Korean can I learn in 90 days by watching Netflix?

It started by watching this YouTube video, where based on the theory that 'You learn a word by hearing it 20 times in context', you can learn 1000 words in 100 days!

I am going to try this with 90 days, so it's an even 3 months.

💕 The show 💕

He recommends starting with a cartoon that you are familiar with and like. I am choosing to start with 'Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse' It has a surprising number of language translations available, and the show is actually REAPLLY FUNNY. highly recommend even if you don't do the challenge 😂 When I finish Dreamhouse, I'll watch shows actually made in Korea.

📈 Nerd Stuff 📈

So, how do you know which words pay attention to in each episode, and how do you track when a word has hit 20 occurrences (and you should have it memorized?)

Idk how he made the cool lists and charts in the video, so I coded up my own python scripts to do the same thing. As a beginner, this helps me look out for certain words rather than being overwhelmed by how much I still don't understand. I would love to share my python scripts, but It would take a lot to be ready for non-tech ppl to be able to run it. Leave a comment if you want updates on this...

🤩 Let do it! 🤩

So I watched 2 episodes so far, but might restart tomorrow taking some notes this time. I feel really inspired, I hope I can stick with it! I might start posting more language updates and less art and stuff, I know they won't get as many likes as other types of content but I don't care 😘 I'm not gonna change my lifestyle for lemon8 clout that's for sure 😂

... Read moreHey language learners! 👋 So you're curious about diving into a new language, maybe like me, you're eyeing Korean, and wondering if Netflix can actually be your secret weapon? You're in the right place! My own 90-day LANGUAGE Netflix CHALLENGE just kicked off, and I'm already seeing the potential. One of the biggest game-changers for me (and something I wish I'd known sooner!) is using tools that transform your Netflix experience. Many of you might be searching for 'language learning with netflix dual subtitles' or 'netflix dual subtitles chrome extension' – and for good reason! The key is a fantastic browser extension, often known as Language Reactor (formerly 'Language Learning with Netflix'). This tool is a lifesaver! It allows you to see both the original language subtitles and English translations simultaneously, making it incredibly easy to follow along, even if you're a total beginner. You just install it from the Chrome Web Store, open Netflix, select your show, and turn on the dual subtitles. It’s that simple to set up, even if you feel a little bit like 'I'm too lazy' to get started with traditional methods! Maximizing Your 90-Day Challenge with Netflix: Start Smart with Your Shows: Like my adventure with 'Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse,' picking a show you're familiar with or one that's designed for a younger audience (think 'Kids TV' shows, which often have simpler dialogue) is a brilliant strategy. The OCR pointed out how effective shows like 'FRIENDS' or 'SpongeBob' can be for a '100 Day Challenge.' Once you're comfortable, gradually move to native Korean dramas or films. The goal isn't just to watch; it's to engage. Active Learning is Key: Don't just passively consume! The Language Reactor extension isn't just for dual subtitles. It lets you click on words for instant dictionary lookups, save words and phrases, and even use features similar to 'PhrasePump' for spaced repetition. This is where the magic happens – transforming passive viewing into active study. Imagine seeing 'Korean phrases and English translations' pop up instantly and being able to save them to review later. That's how you start building up to those '900 words in 90 days' goals! Keep a Digital (or Physical!) Notebook: While my 'nerd stuff' involves Python scripts, you don't need to be a coder! Just grab a simple digital document or even a physical 'notebook with Korean phrases and English translations.' Jot down new vocabulary, interesting sentence structures, or cultural notes. Reviewing these regularly reinforces what you've learned. It's a tangible way to see your progress and helps solidify those words you hear 20 times in context. Consistency Over Intensity: This '90-day challenge' isn't about cramming; it's about building a sustainable habit. Aim for just 'one episode daily' or even 15-30 minutes of focused watching. Even on days when you feel 'too lazy,' a short session is better than none. Little by little, you'll accumulate knowledge and build confidence towards fluency. I'm so excited to see how much Korean I can truly pick up! If you're looking for an accessible and fun way to learn a language, definitely give this Netflix method a try. It's making my learning journey enjoyable and manageable. Let me know if you're trying it too, or if you have any favorite shows for language learning!

What a cool idea! I’ve been pairing Duolingo sessions with then watching shows with subs and picking out words, like you said. It’s super satisfying when you start catching on!
