This prologue 👀! 🫢

2024/10/16 Edited to

... Read moreI recently picked up 'If You Tell a Lie' by Lucinda Berry, drawn in by its intriguing title and the promise of a gripping thriller. The front cover itself was quite striking, with its colorful text on a dark background, hinting at the dark secrets within. When I saw the synopsis on the back cover, talking about a summer secret and a murder, I was immediately excited—it sounded like exactly the kind of psychological suspense I love to dive into. And let me tell you, that prologue! It was truly disturbing, with its mention of a 'seven seconds' event, immediately setting a chilling tone and high expectations. I remember thinking, 'This is going to be an intense ride.' It really pulled me in, making me believe I was about to embark on a truly unforgettable story about how a single lie can unravel everything. The way it was written, it felt like the book was going to explore the intricate web of deception and its devastating consequences in a masterful way, living up to the implied question of 'how to tell a lie' and get away with it, or rather, the fallout when you don't. However, as I continued past that powerful opener, my feelings started to become a bit mixed. While the central mystery of the book revolved around a significant lie and its repercussions, which certainly aligned with what I was looking for, I found that the narrative didn't quite maintain the same level of intensity that the prologue promised. There were moments of genuine suspense, don't get me wrong, where I was eager to see what would happen next. But then, other parts felt like they dragged a little, and I struggled to stay fully immersed in the characters' journeys. I kept waiting for that jaw-dropping moment or a twist that would completely blindside me, but many of the reveals felt somewhat predictable. For a psychological thriller centered around a deep secret and murder, I craved more complexity in the characters and their motivations. I wanted to feel more connected to their struggles and the moral dilemmas presented by their lies, but they often felt a bit underdeveloped, making it hard to truly empathize with their choices. Ultimately, while 'If You Tell a Lie' had a fantastic premise and a prologue that truly grabbed my attention, the execution throughout the rest of the book didn't quite live up to that initial promise, which led to my 2.5/5 rating. It wasn't a bad read, but it also wasn't a standout for me in the thriller genre. If you're looking for a quick read and enjoy Lucinda Berry's style, you might still find some enjoyment in it, especially if you set your expectations for a moderately paced suspense rather than a relentless, edge-of-your-seat thriller.
