Samples (Soie d’Alger)

I continue to add new colors to my Soie d’Alger palette. I embroider small sections with French knots next to each color, and you can see that their colors are slightly darker than the thread samples.

I need to see what the color will be in the small stitches, that's why I decided to make a color card for some types of threads

This is because French knots and other embroidery stitches reflect light differently, often rendering a darker or richer tone than the raw spool. Creating a color card, as described, is a practical way to evaluate how each shade will look in your finished piece. It allows you to test small samples directly on your chosen fabric before committing to a full design. This method helps prevent surprises and assures color harmony in your embroidery. The references to numbered codes such as A146, A1683, and 4147 pertain to specific shades in the Au Ver à Soie Soie d’Alger thread line, a highly regarded silk embroidery thread known for its sheen and quality. Collecting these samples, labeling them clearly, and comparing their appearance under different lighting conditions—natural and artificial—can further enhance your decision-making process. Additionally, understanding that Soie d’Alger 12 and 2/13 denote thread weight and thickness will help in matching the thread to the stitch type and fabric weave. Heavier threads like 2/13 are more suitable for bold stitches, while finer 12-weight threads excel in delicate details. Ensuring your thread samples include variation in stitch styles, like French knots, satin stitch, or backstitch, can provide a broader understanding of how color depth and texture change with different techniques. In summary, maintaining a detailed and clearly annotated thread color card for Soie d’Alger threads, tested with actual embroidery stitches, is invaluable for any stitching enthusiast aiming for precision and beautiful results in silk embroidery projects.
