As a huge Monster Hunter fan, I absolutely love bringing these incredible creatures to life through my art. If you’ve ever wondered how to approach drawing these legendary monsters, or just want some inspiration, I’m happy to share a bit about my process and what makes each one so unique to sketch! When I started this collection of 'Honorable Mention' monsters, I always begin by studying their in-game models and official art. For a monster like Gigginox, capturing its elongated, flexible body and those distinctive wing-like structures is key. I focused on its black and purple palette with striking pink accents to really make it pop on paper. Trying to convey that unsettling, eerie vibe it has was a fun challenge! Then there's the majestic Kirin. This unicorn-like creature demands elegance. When drawing Kirin, I pay close attention to its rearing posture, the prominence of its horn, and especially its flowing mane. The light blue and white color scheme really emphasizes its mythical, almost ethereal quality. It’s all about getting that sense of movement and grace. Malzeno was an exciting one! Its dragon-like form, large wings, and sharp claws are already imposing. What really sets it apart are those small red floating elements surrounding it, so I made sure to include those to enhance its vampiric feel. The gray and red colors help to convey its menacing nature. Drawing Amatsu was a lesson in flow and grandeur. As a serpentine dragon, its large, flowing fins and yellow head crest are its defining features. I tried to capture the swirling lines and almost cloud-like presence that surrounds it, giving it that ethereal, storm-god appearance in green and white tones. Tidal Najarala was a blast to color! Those iridescent scales in shades of blue, green, and purple are just stunning. The challenge here was depicting its coiled posture and making sure each scale felt distinct yet harmonious. It’s all about layering colors to get that shimmering effect. And finally, Lunastra! This lion-like dragon has such a powerful presence. I focused on its large wings and spiky tail, but what truly defines Lunastra is the blue flames around its feet. Adding those fiery details really brings the whole drawing to life and showcases its fierce personality. My biggest tip for anyone wanting to draw Monster Hunter monsters is to observe their unique characteristics. What makes a Gigginox creepy? What makes a Kirin majestic? What makes a Malzeno threatening? Break down their shapes, understand their physiology, and don't be afraid to experiment with colors to bring out their personalities. It's a fantastic way to appreciate the incredible designs in the Monster Hunter world, and I hope my art inspires you to pick up a pencil too!
