Patient Information Handout 📚✏️

Yesterday I posted about an assignment I had to do, i had to create a patient handout and choose a specialty to go off of I chose cardiology and this is my patient information handout that I created using Canva 🫀📚✏️ #school #homework #health #heart

2024/7/29 Edited to

... Read moreBuilding that cardiology patient handout for my school assignment was such an eye-opener! While I tried to pack in the essentials, it made me realize just how much goes into truly understanding and maintaining a healthy heart. It's not just about knowing the big conditions like CAD or a heart attack, but also about integrating small, consistent habits into our daily lives. Beyond the basic healthy heart tips of diet, exercise, and avoiding smoking, there’s so much more we can do. When we talk about diet, it's not just about 'eating healthy' but embracing a rainbow of fruits and vegetables, choosing whole grains over refined ones, and opting for lean proteins. I’ve personally found that focusing on healthy fats from sources like avocados and nuts, and consciously reducing processed foods, makes a huge difference in how I feel. And let's not forget about staying hydrated! Replacing sugary drinks with water is a simple yet powerful change. Exercise, too, can be more than just a chore. Finding activities you genuinely enjoy, whether it’s brisk walking, dancing, swimming, or cycling, makes it sustainable. Aiming for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, coupled with some strength training, can significantly boost your cardiovascular health. And remember, even short bursts of activity throughout the day add up! Of course, avoiding smoking and vaping is non-negotiable for heart health, as these habits severely damage blood vessels. But what about something often overlooked: stress management? Chronic stress can take a real toll on your heart. Incorporating mindfulness, meditation, spending time in nature, or even just dedicating time to a beloved hobby can help keep stress levels in check. It’s all about finding what works for *you*. Understanding common conditions is equally vital. My handout briefly touched on Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), which is essentially the narrowing of the arteries supplying blood to the heart. Symptoms can include chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, and fatigue, especially during exertion. Recognizing these can be crucial. And when it comes to a heart attack, knowing the emergency symptoms is paramount. While the classic severe chest pain radiating to the arm or jaw is well-known, symptoms can also include shortness of breath, lightheadedness, cold sweats, or nausea. It’s so important to call for emergency help immediately if you or someone you're with experiences these signs – every minute counts. The whole process really highlighted the importance of patient education. Having a clear, concise guide, like the one I made with Canva, empowers individuals to take charge of their health. It helps demystify complex medical terms and provides actionable steps. While my handout provided a snapshot, continuously seeking reliable information and having open conversations with healthcare providers are key to long-term heart health. Learning about your body and understanding potential risks, like high blood pressure or cholesterol levels, is the first step towards a healthier future.
