easy cloth diaper routine ✨

Cloth diapers are so much less intimidating than I originally thought! We use cloth diapers part time and I have 14 diapers total 😊

... Read moreTransitioning to cloth diapers felt like a huge leap, but honestly, it's been one of the best decisions for our family! If you're curious about making the switch or just want to refine your current system, let me walk you through my personal, stress-free cloth diaper routine. It’s definitely less intimidating than I originally imagined, and once you get the hang of it, it just becomes a natural part of your week. Let's dive into the most asked-about part: the washing routine. After all, clean diapers are happy diapers (and happy babies!). My approach is pretty straightforward and ensures everything is sparkling clean without harsh chemicals. First, for the soiled diapers, I usually just give them a quick spray over the toilet with a diaper sprayer to get rid of any solids. Then, all dirty diapers, wet or soiled, go into a dry pail lined with a large wet bag. When it's wash day (typically every 2-3 days for my stash of 14 diapers), here's what I do: The Pre-Rinse Cycle: I always start with a pre-rinse with warm water. This step is crucial because it helps to wash away any loose soil and urine, preventing stains and odors from setting in. Think of it as a pre-soak that gets things started. My washing machine has a specific pre-rinse option, which makes it super easy. I find warm water works best here to loosen everything up. The Main Wash: After the pre-rinse, it's time for the heavy lifting! I run a full, long wash cycle using cold water and a gentle detergent. Why cold water for the main wash? It's generally better for the fabric longevity and helps prevent certain stains from setting. You want to use a detergent that's free of dyes, perfumes, and fabric softeners, as these can build up on the diaper fibers and reduce absorbency. I've experimented with a few, and finding one that works well with your water type (hard or soft) is key. For me, a regular amount of my chosen gentle detergent does the trick. The Extra Rinse: To ensure all detergent residue is completely gone, I always add an extra warm rinse cycle. This is especially important for sensitive skin to prevent rashes and for maintaining the absorbency of your diapers. Nobody wants a leaky diaper from residue buildup! Drying Time: My favorite part is seeing them fresh on the line! I always opt for overnight hang drying. Not only is it gentle on the diaper elastics and PUL (the waterproof layer), but the sun is a natural stain remover and deodorizer. If the weather isn't cooperating, I'll machine dry on a low heat setting, but hang drying is my go-to for extending the life of my diapers. Beyond washing, having a little cloth diapering checklist really helps keep things simple. You'll want about 12-24 diapers (depending on how often you wash), a couple of wet bags (a small one for your diaper bag and a larger one for home), a gentle, cloth-diaper-safe detergent, and reusable wipes if you're going fully zero-waste. For diaper rash concerns, I’ve learned that cloth diapers are often great for preventing them due to their breathability. However, if a rash does occur, make sure to use cloth-diaper-safe creams that don't contain petroleum or zinc oxide, as these can coat the diaper fibers. Frequent changes are also your best friend! Switching to cloth has been such a rewarding journey, both for my baby and for our planet. It truly doesn't have to be complicated, and with a solid routine like this, you'll be a cloth diapering pro in no time!
