In QiGong We Have Three Family Jewels
Kevin Dewayne Hughes, QiGong Sifu
These three treasures are often misunderstood by the modern practitioner, because they may have only been exposed to archaic terminology and mystical explanations. For example, shen is not a mystical force. In this series I will do a dedicated video to each jewel.

When I first began practicing QiGong, the concept of the three family jewels—Jing, Qi, and Shen—felt quite elusive, especially due to the often mystical language surrounding them. However, as I deepened my practice and studied under experienced instructors, I realized these treasures are very practical and foundational components of one’s health and vitality. Jing, often translated as 'essence,' is the foundation of physical vitality. It’s stored in the kidneys and represents our inherited vitality and constitution. I found that cultivating Jing through QiGong movements and mindful lifestyle choices helped improve my energy levels and resilience over time. Qi, or 'energy,' is the vital life force that animates the body. Proper breathing techniques and focused movements in QiGong help cultivate and guide Qi throughout the body’s meridians. Personally, practicing controlled breathing exercises enhanced my mental clarity and emotional balance. Shen is commonly misunderstood as some mystical force; however, it relates to spirit or consciousness, manifesting as our mental and emotional health. I noticed that refining Shen through meditation and QiGong helped me manage stress and foster a more centered, peaceful mind. An essential insight I gained is that these three treasures must be aligned and balanced to achieve holistic health. Throughout my journey, I kept revisiting Kevin Dewayne Hughes's teachings and articles, which demystify these concepts and provide practical approaches. His emphasis on dispelling archaic and mystical misunderstandings helped me appreciate QiGong as a unique blend of physical, energetic, and spiritual practice. For anyone curious about incorporating the three family jewels in their QiGong practice, I recommend starting with gentle daily exercises focusing on breath and posture, gradually exploring meditation to cultivate Shen. Remember that QiGong is a personal journey, and understanding these treasures aligns with nurturing your body, mind, and spirit over time. Exploring Kevin Dewayne Hughes’s blog and resources alongside personal practice can provide insightful guidance on this transformative path.
