Starter Locs

Hey everyone! I've been getting so many questions about my toddler's starter locs, especially about the two-strand twist method, so I wanted to share a bit more detail about our journey. When we decided to start locs for my little one, I did a ton of research, and the two-strand twist method really stood out as the best option, especially for delicate natural hair. It creates a beautiful, defined look right from the start, and it’s generally gentler on the scalp than other methods like coiling or interlocking for beginners. One of the biggest keys to successful two-strand twist starter locs is making sure the hair is clean and well-moisturized before you even begin. I always start with a gentle clarifying shampoo to remove any buildup, followed by a deep conditioner to ensure the hair is soft and pliable. Once it's towel-dried and detangled, I apply a lightweight leave-in conditioner and a natural oil – nothing too heavy that will cause buildup later on. The sectioning part is crucial, as you can see in the close-up of my toddler's hair. Achieving those neatly sectioned twists is what gives the locs a clean, uniform look as they mature. I usually opt for square or diamond-shaped sections, making sure they're consistent in size. For toddlers, it's important to keep the sections not too small, to prevent too much tension and make them easier to manage. Once the sections are defined, I take two strands from one section and simply twist them around each other from root to tip. The goal here isn't super tightness, but rather consistent tension to encourage the hair to lock. I usually secure the ends with a tiny rubber band for the first few weeks, just to keep them from unraveling too much, especially with an active toddler! After the twists are in, the real journey begins! For the first few weeks, you'll want to be super gentle with washing. I usually dilute a natural shampoo and focus on cleansing the scalp, letting the suds run down the locs. Patting dry with a microfiber towel is essential to avoid frizz. Covering their hair at night with a silk or satin bonnet or scarf is a game-changer for preserving the twists and minimizing frizz. Don't be discouraged if you see some frizz or unraveling; that's totally normal in the early stages of starter locs. This is actually a sign that the hair is starting to bud and combine. Re-twisting should be done sparingly, maybe every 4-6 weeks, to avoid thinning. The two-strand twist method really helps create a solid foundation, allowing the locs to mature beautifully with minimal manipulation. It's a journey, but seeing those defined twists evolve into mature locs is incredibly rewarding!
