Workaholic

Okay, so here I am, diving into my very first post on Lemon8, and what better way to start than by being completely honest about something many of us might struggle with: being a workaholic. When I think about what truly defines a 'workaholic,' it’s not just about putting in long hours. It’s a mindset, a lifestyle, and sometimes, a bit of a burden. I’ve often asked myself, 'Who am I beyond my work?' And honestly, it's a question I’m still figuring out. One of the first characteristics I notice in myself, and in others I suspect might be workaholics, is an insatiable drive for achievement. It’s not enough to do well; you have to excel, constantly push for more, and that 'more' never quite feels like enough. There’s this internal pressure, almost like a constant hum, telling you that your worth is tied directly to your productivity and success. Another big one is the inability to fully switch off. Even when I’m trying to relax, my mind is often buzzing with work-related thoughts. I might be planning my next recipe as a 'Southern cook' or trying to enjoy playtime with my fur baby as a 'Dog mom,' but a part of my brain is still drafting emails or strategizing for a project. It makes truly enjoying downtime incredibly challenging. It's like I have a constant to-do list running in the background, even when I'm supposed to be unwinding. Then there’s the neglect of personal life and relationships. This one hits hard for me, especially as a 'hopeless romantic.' You want to nurture connections, but work often takes precedence. Dates get rescheduled, calls with friends get missed, and sometimes, even family time feels rushed because your mind is already drifting back to that looming deadline. It's easy to rationalize it by saying, 'I'm doing this for a better future,' but the present moments slip away. Perfectionism is also a huge companion to workaholism. There's a deep-seated fear of making mistakes or delivering anything less than perfect. This means re-checking, over-analyzing, and spending extra hours on tasks that might already be perfectly fine. It's a double-edged sword: it can lead to high-quality output, but it also leads to immense stress and burnout. Finally, the feeling of guilt when not working. This is a major sign for me. If I take a break, go on vacation, or even just sit down for an hour to watch a movie, there's this nagging feeling that I should be doing something productive. It’s hard to justify rest, even when my body and mind are screaming for it. It's a constant battle between wanting to live a balanced life and feeling compelled to keep pushing.
