Okay, so as a fellow nail enthusiast and tech, Kel's question really hit home! It's so true, we all have those little things that just get under our skin. While we absolutely adore our clients and love bringing their nail dreams to life, there are definitely some habits that can make our day a bit more challenging. I’m going to spill some of my own pet peeves, hoping it helps everyone understand the salon experience a little better, from both sides of the table! 1. The "No-Show" or Last-Minute Cancellations: This is probably at the top of every tech's list, especially for independent artists. Our time is literally our money. When you don't show up or cancel just an hour or two before your appointment, it's not just an empty chair; it’s lost income and a wasted spot that another client could have filled. A simple call or message 24-48 hours in advance makes a world of difference and is just common courtesy! 2. Arriving Late... Without a Heads-Up: We meticulously plan our schedules to give each client the time and attention they deserve. If you're running more than 5-10 minutes late, please, please call us! Without that heads-up, it throws off our entire day, impacting subsequent appointments and forcing us to rush your service, which no one wants. We'd rather know and adjust than be caught off guard. 3. Picking or Peeling Off Your Previous Set: Oh, this one makes me cringe! I know it’s tempting when your gel or acrylic starts lifting, but picking off your old set can severely damage your natural nail plate. When you come in with torn, thin, or damaged nails because of picking, it makes our job harder and sometimes even impossible to give you the beautiful, healthy set you're dreaming of. Let us do the safe removal; it's part of our service for a reason! 4. Not Communicating Specific Desires (or Changing Your Mind Mid-Service): I love a client who knows exactly what they want, but I also understand if you're unsure. What's tricky is when you say "whatever you think looks good," then halfway through the service, decide you hate it. Even more challenging is when you bring a picture of intricate nail art or specific charms you saw online but don't mention it until you're already in the chair, expecting us to have every single item in stock. A quick text beforehand with inspiration photos, especially for unique items like those specific charms, helps us prepare or let you know if it’s achievable! 5. Demanding Specific Techniques That Aren't Safe or Recommended: This touches on what some clients might complain about, like "She didn't cut my cuticles." While I understand some people prefer a very clean look, sometimes clients demand aggressive cuticle cutting or other techniques that aren't actually healthy or safe for their nail beds. As professionals, our priority is nail health. When we gently push back or only trim dead skin, it's usually for your long-term benefit, not to be difficult! Trust your tech's expertise when it comes to maintaining nail health and avoiding potential infections or damage. 6. Being on Your Phone Constantly During the Service: I completely get needing to stay connected, but constantly texting, scrolling, or taking calls can make it incredibly difficult for us to do our intricate work, especially when we need to position your hand just right. It also makes it hard to connect and ensure you’re enjoying your experience. A little conversation or quiet relaxation goes a long way in making your nail appointment a truly relaxing treat! 7. Expecting Miracles for the Price of a Basic Mani: We pour our heart, skill, and ongoing education into our craft. We invest in quality products, strict sanitation, and continuous training to stay current with trends. When clients compare our bespoke services to a quick, cheap salon down the street, or haggle over prices, it can feel like our expertise isn't valued. Quality products, a clean environment, and skilled artistry come at a price, and it reflects in the longevity and health of your nails. Ultimately, we want every client to leave feeling amazing and with beautiful, healthy nails.
