UMBILICAL CORD 101

The umbilical cord is a vital structure connecting a baby to the placenta during pregnancy, allowing the transfer of nutrients and oxygen.

After birth, the cord is clamped and cut, leaving a small stump attached to the baby’s abdomen.

Proper care of this stump is essential for preventing infection and ensuring it heals correctly. Usually before leaving the hospital, they will explain and show you how to properly care for it!

Firstly, keep the umbilical cord stump dry. Moisture can lead to infections and prolong healing. Keeping the area dry will help also the natural process of it falling off on its own.

To maintain dryness, keep the diaper folded below the stump to avoid direct contact and irritation. This prevents the area from becoming damp and helps the stump dry out naturally.

Let the stump fall off on its own, which typically happens within the first few weeks. Avoid pulling or manipulating it, as this can cause bleeding or infection. Natural detachment ensures proper healing and reduces the risk of complications.

... Read moreThe umbilical cord serves an essential role in pregnancy, providing nutrients and oxygen to the developing baby. After birth, caregivers must manage the umbilical cord stump properly to avoid infection and promote healing. According to health professionals, the key to effective care lies in maintaining a dry environment around the stump, as moisture can lead to bacterial growth and infection. Additionally, it's recommended to keep the diaper folded below the stump to ensure airflow and prevent irritation, enabling the stump to dry out efficiently. Waiting for the stump to fall off on its own is paramount. Typically, this happens within one to three weeks postpartum, and pulling on the stump can lead to complications such as bleeding. By allowing natural detachment, parents can help facilitate proper healing. It's important to watch for any signs of infection, such as redness or discharge, and to consult a pediatrician if any unusual symptoms arise. For first-time parents, understanding the significance of these care practices can ease worries and promote the well-being of their newborn during this transitional phase.
