Newborn Cheat Sheet

Newborn cheat sheet! It takes awhile to figure out a routine with your newborn, however knowing a few quick facts can help you establish more of a go with the flow schedule. It can also help you know what to expect.

Sleep:

• Newborns sleep a lot! You can help regulate their circadian rhythm by bringing them outside every morning. Remember to place baby on their back to sleep with nothing in the bassinet or crib.

• Feeding: Feed newborns on demand! Make sure they’re eating enough and staying awake by feeding them in just a diaper. Cluster feeding happens with newborns so if it feels like you’re none stop feeding, then your newborn is cluster feeding.

Skin: protect the umbilical cord and don’t get it wet. Keep an eye out for any infections and allow it to fall off on its own. The white cheesy coating is called vernix and it protects your baby’s skin so don’t bathe it off right away!

• Diaper changes: check your newborn’s diaper often. Our baby was breastfed and we never knew when she pooped because it didn’t smell so we checked often.

Tummy time: you can begin tummy time when your baby is a few days old. Let them get used to it but don’t expect them to stay on their tummy for long at first.

... Read moreBecoming a new parent is a whirlwind, and I remember feeling so overwhelmed trying to understand all my baby's little signals! My original cheat sheet touched on some basics, but I wanted to dive a bit deeper into those crucial early weeks, especially when it comes to understanding your little one's feeding and sleep patterns. Let's talk more about feeding cues and rooting. When my baby was tiny, I quickly learned that crying is actually a late sign of hunger! Before that, they'll give you plenty of clues. Watch for their mouth opening and closing, sticking out their tongue, or making little smacking noises. The rooting reflex is fascinating – if you gently stroke their cheek or mouth, they'll turn their head towards the touch, opening their mouth ready to latch. This is a clear sign they're looking for food! Feeding on demand truly means responding to these early signals, not waiting for a strict schedule. It helps establish a good milk supply if you're breastfeeding and ensures your baby gets the nourishment they need when they need it. And oh, cluster feeding! This was a big one for me. It felt like some evenings my baby was attached to me for hours, wanting to feed almost constantly. It's totally normal, especially during growth spurts (usually around 2-3 weeks, 6 weeks, and 3 months) or when they're trying to boost your milk supply. It can be exhausting, but remember it’s temporary and a vital part of their development. Just settle in with a good book or show, and know you're doing exactly what your baby needs. Regarding sleep, while newborns do sleep around 16 hours a day, it’s not always in long stretches! Establishing their circadian rhythm is key. Beyond taking them outside in the morning, try to keep daytime feeds and interactions a bit more stimulating, with plenty of light. At night, keep things calm, dim the lights, and minimize talking. This helps them differentiate between day and night. Remember, always place your baby on their back to sleep, in an empty bassinet or crib – nothing else but them! Finally, a bit more on diaper checks. My breastfed baby’s poops really didn't smell, so I relied on checking frequently! For breastfed babies, expect runny, seedy, mustard-yellow stools. For formula-fed babies, they're usually a bit thicker and paler. The number of wet diapers is also a great indicator of hydration. In the first few days, you'll see one wet diaper per day of life (e.g., 2 wet diapers on day 2), then typically 5-6+ wet diapers a day after that. Always keep an eye on skin around the umbilical cord to ensure it stays dry and free from infection until it falls off naturally. And that amazing vernix – let it do its job protecting their skin for a day or two before the first bath! I hope these extra insights help you feel even more prepared and confident in navigating those precious, but sometimes challenging, newborn days!
