Is it too late to go back to school?

I’ve been reading What They Teach You at Harvard Business School, and it’s prompted me to do a life audit and reevaluate my approach to the lifestyle/future I’m building towards.

I’ve worked in fitness for the past 5 years. I earned my degree in Kinesiology, became a personal trainer, built my own business, and developed skills that extend far beyond coaching people in the gym. And I honestly I have felt stuck or like I pigeon holed myself into a box I would never be able to get out of.

But then I remember back in grade school when we would do future planning to thoroughly answer the question:

What do I want my life to look like in the next 5 to 10 years?

Not starting at the career or income, but the lifestyle, relationships, freedom, and the legacy you’d want to leave behind.

This exercise reminded me that success, by itself, isn’t enough of a target, and the importance of making sure the life I’m building is aligned with my core values. One of the primary ones being privacy.

As much as I love creating content and the opportunities social media has provided, I’ve started exploring what career paths can allow me continue doing what I enjoy while maintaining my privacy. So I’ve been auditing my skills, created a “brag sheet,” researching industries, identifying transferable strengths, and exploring opportunities that align with both my interests and the life I ultimately want to live.

This process has really allowed me the opportunity to be curious, ask better questions, and consider possibilities I had not known before. And most importantly, to build a future that’s aligned with who I am rather than who I think I’m supposed to be.

If you’ve ever found yourself questioning what comes next, maybe that’s not a sign that you’re lost. Maybe it’s an invitation to get clear on where you’re going. And if you’d be interested in the future-planning workbook I’ve created for myself, let me know. I’d be happy to share it💕

... Read moreFrom my own experience, deciding whether to go back to school later in life can feel overwhelming, especially when you've already invested time and effort in a particular field. However, it’s never truly too late to pursue education again if it aligns with your long-term lifestyle goals and values. One of the key lessons I've learned is that the decision to return to school should stem from a clear understanding of what you want your life to look like in the next 5 to 10 years—not just the career or income you want, but the kind of freedom, relationships, and legacy you aim to build. This mindset shift helped me evaluate the true purpose of further education for myself. I started by auditing my existing skills and achievements, creating a detailed 'brag sheet' to assess my transferable strengths. This helped me realize that many of the skills I had developed in fitness and personal training—like communication, motivation, and business acumen—could apply in other industries without necessarily needing to return to school full-time. For those contemplating going back to school, it’s valuable to explore flexible learning options such as online courses, certifications, or part-time programs that accommodate existing commitments and privacy needs. For example, if maintaining privacy is important, as it is for me, online education platforms provide an excellent way to upskill discreetly. Additionally, asking better questions about what you want rather than what you think you should want opens new possibilities. It might mean shifting towards roles that blend your interests with your lifestyle preferences, rather than pursuing a traditional career trajectory. Ultimately, whether or not you choose to return to school, this process of future planning is a powerful reminder that your life and career are yours to design intentionally. It’s less about age or timing and more about clarity and alignment with who you truly are and want to become. If you find yourself uncertain about what comes next, try a simple exercise: define your ideal lifestyle in detail, consider what values must be honored, and then evaluate if returning to school supports or hinders these goals. This approach provides a personalized framework for making confident, strategic decisions about education and career paths.
