I Did Not Like These…

I’m not someone who usually rates books one or two stars. As long as I was entertained, I give the book 3 stars. However, these books were not my favorites.

***I do want to mention that these are all my opinion and I am not trying to be rude or judgmental to the authors or those who enjoyed the books! I love the bookish community and I really looked forward to reading these and hearing everyone’s thoughts on them. ***

1. Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber āļø - Might have just been me but I did not find the plot or characters intriguing or entertaining. The premise of the story was very back and forth and hard for me to understand. I might read the rest of the series but I’m not rushing for the next book.

2. Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi āļø - I was pretty disappointed that I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I expected. This genre and story is right up my alley, yet I couldn’t find myself entertained or interested in what would happen next. The ending started to pick up and I’m interested to see what will happen next for the love interests. But again, I’m not rushing for the next one.

3. It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover āļøāļø - Colleen has never been one of my top authors and I listened to this book on audible. I enjoyed how the book ended and how it led into the next one. However, it was very hard for me to like all the characters and the majority of the book was very predictable and incredibly cheesy (like cringy cheesy).

... Read moreIt’s a universal bookworm experience: You pick up a highly-rated, super popular book – maybe one that everyone on #booktok or #lemon8bookclub is raving about – only to find yourself… disappointed. It’s okay to admit it! Not every book is for every person, and sometimes, even the most beloved stories just don't resonate. I’ve definitely had my share of these moments, and it feels good to share why some of my highly anticipated reads ended up as my lowest rated books of 2024. Let’s dive a bit deeper into why some popular reads, like the ones I mentioned, might not hit the mark for certain readers. For 'Once Upon a Broken Heart' by Stephanie Garber, while many adore its whimsical fantasy, some (like me!) might struggle with the plot's pacing or find the magical system a bit convoluted. If you prefer a fantasy world with clearer rules or more straightforward character motivations, this one might feel a bit scattered. Then there’s 'Shatter Me' by Tahereh Mafi. Its distinctive, poetic writing style is either loved or found to be a barrier. While I appreciated its uniqueness, if you're looking for fast-paced action from the get-go or find certain literary techniques distracting, it might take a while to get hooked. And 'It Ends With Us' by Colleen Hoover? She's a titan in romance, but her work often delves into intense emotional themes that can feel predictable or, as I found, sometimes a bit cheesy for my personal taste. Character choices can be polarizing, and if you prefer more nuanced or less dramatic storytelling, it might not be your cup of tea. So, how can we navigate the vast world of books and minimize those disappointing reads? Here are a few tips I've picked up on my reading journey: Know Your Vibe: What genres, tropes, and writing styles do you consistently enjoy? Do you love slow-burn romance or prefer instant connection? High fantasy or cozy mystery? Understanding your core preferences is key. Read Reviews Strategically: Instead of just looking at star ratings, read why people liked or disliked a book. Do their reasons align with your own preferences or pet peeves? For instance, if multiple reviews mention a slow start and you hate slow starts, that's a red flag for you. Sample Before You Commit: Many online bookstores offer free samples of the first few chapters. Utilize your local library's e-book options to try out a book without a full purchase. This gives you a taste of the writing style and initial plot to see if it grabs you. Embrace the DNF (Did Not Finish): It's perfectly okay to put a book down if it's not working for you. Life is too short to force yourself through hundreds of pages you're not enjoying. Sometimes, it's just not the right time for that particular story. Look Beyond the Bestseller Lists: While popular books are popular for a reason, there's a whole world of incredible literature out there that might not be topping the charts. Explore indie authors, diverse voices, or recommendations from smaller, niche book communities. You might discover your next five-star read in an unexpected place! Finding books you love is a personal adventure, and it’s okay for your taste to differ from the crowd. Keep exploring, keep reading, and most importantly, keep enjoying the journey of discovering stories that truly resonate with you!

I didn't enjoy Once Upon a Broken Heart very much either. 😭 I was kind of sad that I wasn't liking it as much as I thought I would. I loved It Ends With Us a lot! And I haven't read Shatter Me yet.
