How hyped do you think these reads should be?
My take on the over hyped, under hyped, and accurately hyped trend.
My over hyped book: Powerless by Lauren Roberts. I feel like I’ve said this in several posts now at this point but this book I just WAY too overhyped. It says great for fans of red queen and the hunger games… But this is just a copy and paste and uses the exact same plot points and truly feels like reading fan fiction to me.
My under hyped book: A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross. I love Rebecca Ross so much and know she has gotten a lot of hype because of Divine Rivals, but not enough people are talking about her previous books! And a River Enchanted is my favorite book by her. The duology is so good! It has a Scottish and Irish elements to it.
My accurately hyped book: Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. I see a good bit of Brandon Sanderson hype on all forms of social media and I think it is very well deserved. He has such unique magic systems and I really love his writing style. I think everybody who enjoys fantasy should absolutely try his books and I think Mistborn is a great place to start.

Hey bookworms! We all know the thrill of discovering a new read, but sometimes the sheer volume of "must-read" recommendations can be overwhelming. It makes you wonder, are these books really as good as everyone says? Or are some just riding a wave of viral fame? This whole idea of overhyped versus underhyped reads is something I think about constantly, and it’s why I love digging into what truly makes a book shine. When a book becomes massively popular, it's easy to get swept up in the excitement. But I've learned to approach those viral sensations, like Powerless by Lauren Roberts, with a bit of caution. While it promised an epic fantasy, I personally felt it was a bit too familiar, almost feeling like other books I'd already read. Sometimes, books get so much buzz that they struggle to live up to the sky-high expectations, especially if they feel derivative or don't bring anything truly fresh to the table. It's not to say they're bad, but often, the sheer volume of hype can set you up for disappointment when you're hoping for something groundbreaking. Always remember that popular doesn't always equal perfect for *you*. On the flip side, there are so many awesome books out there that fly under the radar, just waiting to be discovered. These are the underhyped gems that make your heart sing and leave you wondering why more people aren't talking about them. For me, A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross is a perfect example. Before her more recent work got all the attention, her earlier books, especially this one, were casting their quiet magic. It's incredibly good and atmospheric, drawing you into a world rich with Scottish and Irish folklore. Finding these kinds of books often means venturing beyond the bestseller lists – maybe exploring a debut author, diving into an author's backlist, or even following recommendations from smaller book communities. There's a special joy in championing a book you truly believe deserves more love. Then you have the books that are accurately hyped – the ones that genuinely earn every bit of praise they receive. These are often the popular books of all time that have stood the test of time, or contemporary reads that offer something truly unique and compelling. Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson falls squarely into this category for me. His ability to craft a cool fantasy world with such intricate and unique magic systems is unparalleled. When a book lives up to its hype, it’s usually because the storytelling is strong, the characters are memorable, and the world-building is immersive. It's a reminder that not all hype is bad; sometimes, it's a well-deserved spotlight on an incredible piece of literary fiction or engaging genre work. So, how do we navigate this sea of recommendations to find the books that should be read? My advice is to trust your own taste and be open to exploring. If you loved certain elements of books like Powerless, but want a fresh take, look for stories with similar themes (e.g., magic, rebellion, romance) but perhaps by different authors or from smaller presses. Don't be afraid to pick up an overhyped book to see for yourself, but also make a conscious effort to seek out those hidden treasures. Happy reading, everyone!
