How hyped do you think these reads should be?

My take on the over hyped, under hyped, and accurately hyped trend.

My over hyped book: Powerless by Lauren Roberts. I feel like I’ve said this in several posts now at this point but this book I just WAY too overhyped. It says great for fans of red queen and the hunger games… But this is just a copy and paste and uses the exact same plot points and truly feels like reading fan fiction to me.

My under hyped book: A River Enchanted by Rebecca Ross. I love Rebecca Ross so much and know she has gotten a lot of hype because of Divine Rivals, but not enough people are talking about her previous books! And a River Enchanted is my favorite book by her. The duology is so good! It has a Scottish and Irish elements to it.

My accurately hyped book: Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. I see a good bit of Brandon Sanderson hype on all forms of social media and I think it is very well deserved. He has such unique magic systems and I really love his writing style. I think everybody who enjoys fantasy should absolutely try his books and I think Mistborn is a great place to start.

... Read moreWhen discussing book hype, it’s crucial to distinguish between genuine literary merit and marketing exaggeration. Overhyped books often spark intense debates among readers, with many feeling let down when their expectations aren’t met. 'Powerless' by Lauren Roberts appears to be a prime example, receiving attention largely due to its comparisons with popular series like 'Red Queen' and 'The Hunger Games', despite its recycled plot points. On the other hand, some novels, like 'A River Enchanted' by Rebecca Ross, might fly under the radar even with skilled storytelling and rich themes. This particular book infuses Scottish and Irish folklore, creating an enchanting narrative that merits wider recognition. Conversely, 'Mistborn' by Brandon Sanderson has received widespread acclaim, celebrated for its inventive magic systems and intricate world-building. It stands as a fantastic entry point for new fantasy enthusiasts. Ultimately, this exploration into book hype uncovers the diverse traits that contribute to a book's standing in the community, influencing readers' perceptions and choices.
