The Story of My Life as a Young Writer
My 8th grade English teacher is one of my favorite teachers/people of all time! My 4th grade teacher helped me to realize that I was/AM a writer. At that time, it was short fiction based on our spelling words the week.
Eighth grade is when I learned to write essays. By my junior year of high school, I was one of two in my entire graduating class who scored a 6 on the State of Tennessee’s Writing Assessment test. That was the highest score possible.
I took enough dual enrollment classes with the local community college that I had enough hours to begin at UT Knoxville in the fall of 2000 as a sophomore.
That first year there I took Southern lit bc I had not yet fallen in love with the Spanish language or the people. For the final essay, I chose to do mine on a comparison of the US Declaration of Independence & the Confederate Declaration of Independence. When I got my paper back, it had a red “I” with a note to see my professor.
That made me rather upset. I asked the professor after class, and she said the paper itself was written on the level of an English grad student and that I had plagiarized bc I hadn’t cited many sources. I told her that I had the best, most rigorous English teachers all through my time in K-12. I told her that the Civil War was a hobby of mine growing up, so battle dates and people involved were common knowledge to me. She told me to re-write it and find sources to back up what I had written. When she gave me back the new paper, it had a red B on it. I don’t think a B has ever amused me so much! She knew I could write, and she hated to admit it.
I hope she read my articles in the Knoxville News Sentinel a few years later when I wrote a birthday mookknjnncolumn as a Community Columnist from ‘08-‘09.
I intended to major in English & History when I arrived on Rocky Top in August 2000. By the time it was all said and done, I majored in Spanish & minored in English-Creative Writing. Both skills serve me well to this day!
