Shooting Film Again: First Time with My New (Vintage) Canon AE-1 🎞️📸

📍 Location: Rooftop in Winchester, VA

🎥 Film: Kodak Ultramax 400

📷 Camera: Canon AE-1

There’s something magical about diving back into film photography and feeling the weight of a classic camera in your hands, hearing the satisfying click of the shutter, and knowing each shot means something. I recently purchased a vintage Canon AE-1, and today was my first time using it and loading it up with Kodak Ultramax 400 film, ready to embrace the nostalgia and unpredictability of shooting in analog.

Winchester’s rooftops were the perfect setting for this first roll. The golden light spilling over the city, textured brick walls, and historic charm offered endless inspiration. With every frame, I found myself slowing down and carefully adjusting focus, considering composition, and trusting that the film would capture what I couldn’t fully predict.

Why Kodak Ultramax 400?

It’s a versatile film with great color reproduction, perfect for both sunny rooftop shots and shaded corners. The 400 ISO gave me enough flexibility to shoot in the variable light of the late afternoon.

Tips for First-Time Film Users or Those Getting Back into Film (Like Me!):

1. Meter Carefully: The Canon AE-1’s built-in light meter is your best friend. Half-press the shutter and make sure the exposure needle is in the right spot!

2. Take Your Time: Unlike digital, every shot costs a frame, so make it count.

3. Don’t Stress Perfection: Film photography is about the unexpected. Sometimes imperfections become your favorite shots.

Now the waiting game begins, developing the roll and seeing how the shots turn out! There’s no instant gratification here, but that’s part of the charm. If you’ve been thinking about picking up a film camera, do it!

Have you ever used the Canon AE-1 or Kodak Ultramax 400? Let me know your favorite tips for shooting film!

My latest purchase was the instax mini Evo, retailing $199.99. That’s a pretty big price tag for me, but I had the instax mini 9 for YEARS & got all my monies worth & then some with the hundreds of pictures I took & printed. I went into this as a small investment purchase knowing I’ll u
