And then there are the 'Wants'! This is where budgeting can feel restrictive, but it doesn't have to be. It’s about balance – allocating a specific amount for these personal treats means I can enjoy them guilt-free, knowing I’m still on track with my bigger financial goals. After getting comfortable with my basic budget, I started exploring different strategies. One that really resonated with me is the 50/30/20 Rule. It’s super straightforward: 50% for Needs: This covers all your essentials – housing, utilities, groceries, transportation, insurance, minimum debt payments. Looking at my own budget, this would encompass my bills, gas, groceries, and medicine. 30% for Wants: These are the non-essential things that improve your quality of life – dining out, entertainment, subscriptions, hobbies, and yes, those new shoes or that wig! My 'Wants' section fits perfectly here. 20% for Savings & Debt Repayment: This portion goes towards building your emergency fund, saving for long-term goals (like a house or trips), and paying off any extra debt beyond the minimum. My dedicated savings categories directly align with this. Applying the 50/30/20 rule helped me categorize my existing budget more clearly and see if my spending was balanced. If I noticed my 'Wants' creeping above 30%, it was a clear signal to adjust. It’s not a rigid law, but a fantastic guideline to ensure you’re prioritising correctly.
