My mom used my college fund

After my dad passed, I was left to handle everything alone. My mom offered little help, and months later, I found out she’d been using my college fund—the one my dad set up for me.

She never told me. I only found out after dropping out because she refused to pay tuition. Then she admitted she’d been using it for herself. Including a trip to Europe.

She also tried to keep my dad’s things paintings and a valuable baseball card collection. I was devastated, broke, and basically homeless, staying with my boyfriend’s family.

I got a lawyer. It took over a year, but I won. I got back half of the hidden $90k, the retirement funds, and my dad’s belongings. I haven’t spoken to my mom since.

I’m rebuilding my life now. Still in college, still healing. But finally at peace.

What would you have done in my situation?

... Read moreFamily financial betrayal can leave deep emotional and financial scars, especially when it involves critical resources like a college fund. In this case, the hidden misuse of $90,000 intended for education not only disrupted the author’s academic journey but also led to housing instability and strained familial relationships. College funds are typically established to provide financial support for higher education, ensuring students can focus on their studies without monetary distractions. When these funds are misappropriated by trusted family members, it creates a complex dynamic of legal and emotional challenges. Recovering such funds often requires legal intervention, as seen here where a lawyer helped reclaim half of the misused money and restored valuable assets like retirement funds and sentimental belongings. This situation highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in family financial matters. Furthermore, the author’s journey underscores the resilience needed to overcome such setbacks—returning to college, healing from betrayal, and taking control of one’s future. Emotional healing is just as vital as financial recovery, as trust within family units can be severely damaged. From a legal perspective, cases involving misuse of college funds may vary depending on the fund’s structure and applicable laws, but consulting a qualified attorney is crucial to protect one’s rights. Documentation of finances and early detection of discrepancies are key preventive measures. The experience also stresses the value of external support systems, such as friends or partners' families, who can offer temporary stability during difficult times. Awareness of one’s rights and resources empowers victims to take action and seek justice. This story can encourage others in similar situations to remain hopeful and proactive, emphasizing that recovery and peace are possible. It also serves as a cautionary tale about the need for vigilance and open communication in managing and protecting college funds and family assets.

You were incredibly strong for standing up for yourself. I can’t imagine how painful that betrayal must’ve felt. I’d have lawyered up too.
