What is Machiya?

Majiya () is a traditional Japanese wooden house that serves as both a residence and a place of business (storefront). These traditional Japanese houses have a history of more than a thousand years, going back to c.794 (Heian period).

These two-storey townhomes are not only residential, but also multi-purpose areas, with the first floor facing the street often being used as commercial space. You will find businesses such as kimono shops, thread shops and dry goods shops, each of which plays an important role in Japanese culture and daily life.

The Machiya Kamiumeya is an easy place to walk, or easy to travel by bus. It is near the Clear Water Temple, just one kilo. And also near Gion and Ninenzaka. Historic streets in Higashiyama, Kyoto, Japan. It is a charming paved stone street. It is full of traditional-style wooden buildings that are now shops, restaurants and souvenir shops. This street is famous for its retro atmosphere and often walks from Sannenzaka to Kiyomizu-dera Temple. People come for a walk.
