The Summer I Couldn’t Finish 🌅

Unfinished > finished.

That’s why streaks work, why progress bars motivate, and why Belly’s love triangle keeps trending.

Which app or show gave you the best cliffhanger feeling? 💔

#zeigarnikeffect #productdesign #tsitp

2025/9/14 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, so that little thought about 'Unfinished > finished' really got me thinking, especially after diving deep into the Zeigarnik effect. It's not just about those addictive apps with their streaks or cliffhanger shows like TSITP; this psychological pull extends *right into our love lives and relationships*! Have you ever found yourself replaying a conversation, wondering what could have been with an ex, or getting completely swept up in a fictional love triangle like Belly's with Conrad and Jeremiah? That's the Zeigarnik effect in action. Our brains are designed to remember unresolved tasks or situations better than completed ones. In love, this means that ambiguous signals, unanswered questions, or relationships that end without clear closure can stick with us, sometimes for years. It's like our emotional operating system keeps a 'loop' open, constantly nudging us to find a resolution. This is exactly why those dramatic cliffhangers in shows are so effective – they create a powerful, unresolved tension that makes us have to tune in next week (or binge the next season!). And it’s not just the stories themselves. I've noticed how deeply we get invested in the entire world of a beloved show. When we're hooked on a series like 'The Summer I Turned Pretty,' our curiosity often extends beyond the plot. We start wondering about the actors who bring these characters to life. It’s part of that same Zeigarnik-driven desire for more information, to 'complete' our understanding of something we're passionate about. We might google an actor's background, their personal life, or even details like their age and height, because it feels like another puzzle piece to the world we’ve become so immersed in. It’s a way of trying to 'finish' the connection, even if it's just gathering trivia about the people behind the magic. This intense fan engagement shows just how powerful these 'unfinished loops' are – they drive us to seek out every detail. So, what does this mean for us? Understanding the Zeigarnik effect can be super practical. On one hand, it explains why we're so motivated by progress bars or task lists with undone items – they're little promises of future completion. On the other hand, if we're feeling stuck on something, whether it's a past relationship or a personal goal, it might be because we haven't consciously 'closed the loop.' Sometimes, just acknowledging an unresolved situation and making a mental (or actual) decision to move on, even without a perfect resolution, can help our minds let go. It's all about balancing that thrilling suspense that keeps us engaged, with the need for eventual closure, both in the stories we watch and in our own lives.
