Pilates + strength training 💪🏻👏🏻
Pilates complements strength training by working the muscles and movements that lifting often misses. Doing both gives you a more balanced, effective routine that helps you move better, feel stronger, and stay injury free. ✔️
Pilates is great with strength training because it:
1. Strengthens your core 🔥
2. Improves posture and balance 🧘♀️
3. Makes you more flexible 🤸♀️
4. Helps prevent injuries 🛡️
5. Aids recovery with low-impact movement 💆♀️
Together, they build a strong, stable, and flexible body 💪🏻

When I first started my fitness journey, I was all about heavy lifting. While I loved the feeling of getting stronger, something felt missing – my flexibility was suffering, and I kept having little aches and pains. That's when I discovered that Pilates is a great compliment to strength training. It's true, Pilates is a great compliment to strength training because it targets those smaller, stabilizing muscles that often get overlooked in traditional weightlifting. For example, my core strength improved dramatically, which made my squats and deadlifts feel so much more stable. I also noticed a huge difference in my posture – no more slouched shoulders after a long day at my desk! This synergy truly helps in injury prevention and makes sure your body is strong from the inside out, not just superficially. So, how do you actually combine these two amazing modalities into a cohesive workout plan? It's easier than you think! I've experimented a lot, and here's what works best for me and what I recommend to friends looking to balance their fitness: Option 1: Separate Days. This is probably the most common and easiest approach to start with. I usually do 2-3 days of strength training and then dedicate 1-2 separate days to Pilates on non-lifting days. This allows my muscles to recover from intense lifting while still engaging in beneficial, low-impact movement. For instance, you could do a Monday, Wednesday, Friday strength split, with Pilates sessions on Tuesday and Thursday. Option 2: Same Day, Different Sessions. If your schedule is tight, you can absolutely do both on the same day. I sometimes do a more dynamic Pilates session in the morning to awaken my body and then hit the weights in the evening. Just make sure there's enough time in between to refuel and get a short rest to avoid fatigue. Option 3: Integrate into One Session. This is a more advanced way to combine them. You can use Pilates movements as a dynamic warm-up before lifting, focusing on core activation and mobility. Think cat-cow, bird-dog variations, or pelvic tilts. Alternatively, you can add 15-20 minutes of Pilates-focused core and flexibility work at the very end of your strength session as a cool-down. This helps with active recovery and ensures you leave the gym feeling lengthened and stable. Here’s a sample weekly workout structure that has really helped me see results and maintain balance: Monday: Full Body Strength Training Tuesday: Pilates (focus on core & flexibility) Wednesday: Upper Body Strength Training Thursday: Pilates (focus on balance & posture) Friday: Lower Body Strength Training Saturday/Sunday: Active Recovery (e.g., light walk, stretching) or Rest Since I started incorporating Pilates, I've had far fewer nagging aches and pains. My joints feel more supported, my range of motion has massively improved, and I feel more connected to my body. It's not just about lifting heavier; it's about moving through life with more ease and confidence. If you're looking to elevate your fitness game, definitely give combining Pilates and strength training a try. It’s a powerful duo that will make you feel incredibly strong, flexible, and balanced!
