Hey Lemon8 fam! I'm so excited to share a bit more about my recent Ippo Makunouchi drawing that I posted. As a huge fan of 'Hajime no Ippo,' I've always been captivated by Ippo's relentless spirit and how he constantly pushes past his limits. This particular piece was my attempt to capture that raw determination and his iconic boxing stance in a simple, yet powerful, black and white style. When I started this Ippo Makunouchi drawing, I knew I wanted to focus on his expression. It wasn't just about getting the proportions right for his muscular male character or his dark hair; it was about conveying the fire in his eyes. I imagined him in a crucial moment, maybe just after getting dealt a tough blow but still getting up, ready to fight back. That's why I chose to draw him with a determined expression, fist raised, showing that incredible resilience he's known for. For this piece, I decided to challenge myself by using just a blue ballpoint pen on a simple white sheet of paper from a spiral-bound notebook. There's something really satisfying about the stark contrast you can achieve with black and white drawings. You have to rely purely on line work and shading to create depth and emotion, which I think really suited Ippo's intense focus. Getting the details on his hand wraps and the tension in his fist up was crucial to make his boxing stance feel authentic.
