French Dip Sandwiches

1 large yellow onion

4 lb chuck roast trimmed

1 tsp black pepper

1 oz au jus gravy mix 1 packet

1 oz onion soup mix 1 packet

2 tsp Worcestershire sauce

2 cups beef broth

For The Sandwiches

8 medium hoagie rolls

3 tbsp butter

8 oz provolone cheese

freshly chopped parsley

Place the sliced onions in the bottom of the slow cooker, then season the chuck roast with black pepper on both sides. Add the roast on top of the onions. Sprinkle the au jus mix and onion soup mix over the top of the beef. Mix together the Worcestershire sauce and beef broth and then pour into the slow cooker. Use more beef broth if you want more gravy for dipping at the end. Cover the slow cooker and cook on Low heat for 7 to 8 hours, till the beef is really tender and falls apart easily. Carefully remove the beef from the slow cooker and use a slotted spoon to remove the onions from the bottom and place them in a separate bowl for later use. Using a fine-mesh strainer, pour the dripping from the slow cooker into a bowl or gravy boat. This is the dipping sauce for the French Dip Sandwiches.

Cut the sandwich rolls open and spread butter if desiredbin the middle and toast until lightly browned. Top with the shredded beef, onions and provolone cheese. Garnish with parsley if desired.

... Read moreMaking French Dip Sandwiches at home is surprisingly simple and rewarding, especially when using a slow cooker to achieve perfectly tender beef. One tip I've found is to let the chuck roast cook on low for the full 7 to 8 hours, which helps the meat fall apart easily and absorb all those savory flavors from the au jus and onion soup mix. I usually add a bit more beef broth than the recipe calls for, since it creates extra dipping sauce that's essential to a great French Dip experience. When assembling the sandwiches, toasting the hoagie rolls with butter adds an irresistible crunch and richness that balances the tender beef and gooey provolone cheese. I also like to use freshly chopped parsley not only as a garnish but to add a subtle freshness that brightens the sandwich. For those who love a robust flavor, Worcestershire sauce is a fantastic ingredient that deepens the broth's taste, enhancing every bite. Additionally, cooking the onions directly under the beef in the slow cooker caramelizes them slightly, giving a natural sweetness that complements the savory meat perfectly. If you want to add a personal twist, consider mixing a bit of garlic powder or smoked paprika into the seasoning for a smoky undertone. I’ve also experimented by swapping provolone with Swiss cheese for a nuttier flavor. Overall, this recipe is very flexible and forgiving, making it a great choice whether you’re a beginner or an experienced cook looking to impress family and friends with a classic American sandwich at home.
