What No One Told Me About Postpartum…

Everybody talks about pregnancy. No one talks about THIS…

The emotional rollercoaster of hormone fluctuations, the physical changes like bleeding and soreness, the struggles with breastfeeding, sleep deprivation, the changes in body image that can accompany recovery, etc.

Nobody talks about how physically you can have afterpains, hair loss, incontinence, perineal pain and fear of using the toilet, breast changes, diastasis recti, bleeding, skin issues, and weight retention.

Nobody talks about how mentally and emotionally you can have baby blues, postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis, social isolation, traumatic birth experiences, or fear and intrusive thoughts.

Nobody talks about the initial feeding challenges you can have with breastfeeding, the pressure you can feel to breastfeed, or the guilt you can feel over the feeding decisions you do make.

If you’re like me, you’ve dealt with a variety of these challenges at the same time or maybe you’re going through this now or preparing to go through it. Either way, I want you to know…you’re not alone, mama 💜

... Read moreNavigating the postpartum period can feel like stepping into uncharted territory for many new mothers. While pregnancy often comes with a wealth of information and support, the postpartum phase tends to be shrouded in silence and misunderstanding. Many moms find themselves overwhelmed by the combination of physical recovery and emotional shifts that occur after childbirth. Physically, postpartum bodies undergo significant changes that aren't widely discussed. Common issues include afterpains, which are contractions that help the uterus return to its pre-pregnancy size, often causing discomfort or pain. Hair loss after delivery is typical due to hormonal changes, though it can be surprising and distressing when it starts. Other concerns like urinary incontinence or perineal pain can affect daily activities, including something as basic as using the toilet, which is something many new moms feel hesitant to talk about. Breast changes are another major aspect of postpartum recovery. Swelling, tenderness, or engorgement often accompany breastfeeding attempts. However, breastfeeding itself can introduce challenges like latching difficulties, nipple pain, or concerns about milk supply, sometimes leading to feelings of pressure or guilt related to feeding choices. Mentally and emotionally, the postpartum period is equally demanding. Many women experience baby blues—a temporary mood fluctuation due to hormonal shifts. For some, symptoms can escalate to postpartum depression or more severe postpartum psychosis requiring professional care. Feelings of social isolation or trauma from the birth experience can add to the emotional burden. Intrusive thoughts or anxiety are also common but rarely discussed. Understanding that these experiences are shared by many can be comforting. It’s vital for new moms to seek support—whether through healthcare professionals, support groups, or trusted social circles—to validate their feelings and find strategies for coping. Self-care and open communication can help de-stigmatize postpartum challenges. In addition, partners and family members play a crucial role in recognizing these signs and offering empathy and assistance. Raising awareness about the realities of postpartum life promotes better outcomes for mothers and babies alike. Remember, every postpartum journey is unique, and seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Sharing stories and supporting one another can make the transition into motherhood less isolating and more manageable.
