I’m truly a lazy person when it comes to my hair. I like something that is low maintenance and protective. For years I used to get my hair done every few months just to take it out and get the same thing done again. Locking my hair just made sense for me and my lifestyle.
Being that my kids have eczema I’m afraid to put any scented or unscented chemical based product in my hair. Even the plant based ones with fragrance. One bad move and I can trigger a reaction from my kids.
The only thing that touches my hair is water, soap, and maybe a scarf (depending on the day I have lol). I don’t like that fresh retie/retwist look on me AT ALL!
Call me crazy but less is more. I personally believe I’m preventing my hair from thinning. I don’t make my frites tight and I rarely style it.

Maintaining locs with a minimalist approach can be incredibly rewarding, especially when balancing family health concerns. In my experience, the key is consistency with basic care—using just water and mild soap avoids irritating sensitive skin or triggering eczema flare-ups in loved ones. One thing I've found helpful is avoiding heavy styling or retightening too often. Over-manipulating locs can stress the scalp and hair follicles, potentially leading to thinning or breakage. Instead, wearing a satin or silk scarf to protect my locs at night helps preserve moisture and reduce friction without chemicals. Another tip is to listen to your hair's needs seasonally. Sometimes, brief scalp massages with natural oils like jojoba or coconut can provide nourishment without overpowering fragrances or additives that might affect sensitive household members. I’ve noticed that this 'less is more' philosophy not only keeps my hair strong and healthy but also fits perfectly into my lifestyle as a busy parent. It’s reassuring to know that a fuss-free and protective hair routine can support both hair health and family well-being. If you’re navigating similar challenges, I encourage you to find gentle, personal care rhythms that protect your hair and loved ones alike.
