Parenting ADHD - Handling Meltdowns

It’s been almost a year since my daughter was diagnosed with ADHD-C, and let me tell you, this journey has been a real learning curve. Between therapy sessions, parent training, books, videos, podcasts, and talking to other parents, I’ve picked up so much about navigating this new chapter of motherhood.

Meltdowns? They’re still a thing—just not as frequent now that she’s on meds. But when they do happen, walking her through those moments when she’s escalated or overwhelmed is still a challenge. Here are 3 things I do to help calm her down quickly:

1. Switch up the environment

As soon as a meltdown starts, I take her to another room—or outside if we can. The goal is to get her away from whatever’s triggering her and into a space that’s calmer, quieter, and more private. Whether she needs to cry, vent, or just breathe, this gives her a safe space to do her thing.

2. Use physical touch

My daughter’s always been super affectionate, so touch really helps her settle down. Holding her hand, giving her a hug, or rubbing her back works wonders. It’s like it grounds her and lets her know I’m here for her.

3. Just listen

In those moments, I’m not trying to fix anything or hand out advice. I just focus on listening—to her words, her body language, whatever she’s expressing. I’m not solving problems or disciplining her—that stuff can wait. Right now, it’s all about letting her feel heard and supported.

It’s been a journey, but we’re figuring it out one step at a time. If you’re on this ADHD parenthood ride too, know you’re not alone. We got this! 💪🏾💕

... Read moreBeyond those immediate calming strategies, I've also learned so much about the bigger picture of ADHD emotional regulation and sensory regulation for kids. It's not just about reacting to a meltdown in the moment, but also about proactively building skills and understanding their unique needs to prevent or lessen the intensity of future episodes. One big area has been understanding my daughter's sensory needs. For children with ADHD, sensory input can be both a trigger for overwhelm and a powerful tool for calming. We've explored different strategies, often inspired by principles of sensory integration therapy, even if not through formal sessions. This could mean having a 'sensory toolkit' readily available with items like fidget toys, a weighted lap pad, or even just identifying which sounds or lights are too stimulating for her. For instance, bright, noisy places are often triggers, so we try to prepare her or limit exposure. Creating a 'calm corner' at home, filled with things that provide soothing input—like soft pillows, dim lights, or noise-canceling headphones—has been a game-changer. This proactive approach helps build their ADHD coping skills before they hit a breaking point, making it easier to calm down if an ADHD meltdown does start. Another crucial aspect is teaching emotional regulation. It's a journey, not a destination! We work on identifying feelings before they escalate. Simple things like using a feelings chart, or just sitting down after a calm moment to talk about 'what happened' and 'how you felt,' can make a huge difference. Sometimes, kids with ADHD experience 'restraint collapse' – they hold it all together at school, only to completely fall apart emotionally at home. Recognizing this helps me offer extra patience and a safe, judgment-free space when she returns from a busy day. We also practice simple breathing exercises together, like 'smell the flower, blow out the candle,' which helps re-center her when she feels overwhelmed. It’s about equipping them with ADHD coping mechanisms that work for them. For some, it might involve movement or physical activity, tapping into that ADHD motor coordination aspect. A quick run outside, jumping on a mini-trampoline, or even just stretching can sometimes release pent-up energy and help them regain focus. Every child is different, but by observing and experimenting, we can find personalized strategies that support our children in navigating their ADHD journey more smoothly. Remember, consistency, empathy, and celebrating small victories are key to helping them learn to calm down and thrive. We're in this together!
