Handling Tough Conversations during the Holiday

1.📝 Plan your Responses in Advance.

It's not silly to want to prepare yourself for what could possibly be a critical environment. Dealing with so many people and personalities wanting to know what's going on with YOU, it's a smart move to plan ahead what to say especially about career and relationships.

Ex:

Q: Why haven't you found a job yet?

A: I have some exciting opportunities before me and I'm taking steps towards them

Ex:

Q: When are you going to settle down and get a "real" job?

A: I'm building my career in a way that makes sense for me and I'm happy with where I am

2. Shift the Focus. ↩️

We all know the holidays aren't all about what's going on with you so, when someone starts acting nosy, shift the focus into them or something else!

Ex:

A: It's a work in progress but I'd love to hear about what's new in your life, any updates?

A: I'm finding things out step by step. But enough about me, what's your favorite part about the holidays this year?

A: Great question, why don't we talk about it after dessert?

3. Set Boundaries. 🙅🏽‍♀️

People can hold you up to high standards that they don't even have for themselves. Show them you're secure enough to draw the line and say when enough is enough.

Ex:

A: I appreciate your interest but I'd rather focus on enjoying the holiday.

A: Thanks for your concern but I've got it under control.

A: I'm taking a break from career discussions for the holidays. How's everything going with you?

A: You know, I'm not ready to discuss that but I'll share more when the time is right

4. Find a Safe Space/Person 😌

You don't have to linger around those whom you don't feel comfortable around just because it's a family gathering. Get up and walk around.

Ex:

🍽️The Kitchen: Often a neutral place where you can offer to help cook, clean or serve.

🐕The Kids or Pets: Enjoy your time around these two for a lighthearted and nonjudgmental zone.

☃️Step Outside: Nature has a way of balancing us. Get some fresh air or go for a walk or even play in the snow! Who says the holidays can't be fun.

😌 A Quiet Room: We all need space sometimes, you have a right to take some time for yourself. Remember to speak well of yourself and your situation. All is not lost. There is always hope.

5. Remember the Bigger Picture. 🙌🏼💞

Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year...whatever holiday you celebrate, this time is about love and togetherness, not the time for your family to examine your career and love life. Reflect on personal growth, know everyone's journey is different and stop trying to impress others and focus on creating meaningful conversations. You are worthy of love and deserve to enjoy the celebration just as much as everyone else does. So chin up, smile and let's get ready to enjoy the holidays.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving 🦃

How do you plan on not getting through but enjoying this upcoming holiday season?

#thankyoulemon8 #HOLIDAY #festivefamilymoments #holidaymeals #mental

2024/11/28 Edited to

... Read moreThe holiday season can bring joy, but it can also lead to uncomfortable discussions about careers and personal choices. To better manage these situations, it's essential to establish a proactive approach. Preparing answers in advance can help ease anxiety and ensure you present yourself positively. For example, if someone asks about your job search, share optimism about future opportunities rather than dwelling on the past. Additionally, shifting the spotlight onto others can divert attention away from personal scrutiny and encourage more enriching interactions. Setting clear boundaries is another vital strategy. Politely expressing your desire to enjoy the moment can effectively reduce probing questions while reinforcing your confidence. Creating a safe environment by moving to neutral spaces, such as the kitchen or outdoors, can provide comfort and relief amidst family gatherings. Finally, reflect on the bigger picture. Remember that the holidays are a time for love and connection, not scrutiny. Embracing personal growth and celebrating your journey can help you stay grounded and enjoy the festivities. These steps not only enhance your experience but also contribute to more meaningful conversations, allowing you to fully embrace the spirit of the season.

The second tip, "2. Pray for your own mind," encourages praying for wisdom, protection from lies, peace, and turning to God during hurt, citing various biblical verses like James 1:5 and Philippians 4:6-7.
