3 Pieces of Advice I’d Give Myself

If I was a freshman in college again, this is the advice I’d give myself as a college graduate with a Masters of Architecture and a double Bachelors of Science.

1. Don’t procrastinate!

2. Make lists of everything you need to get done.

3. Say ā€œYesā€ to opportunities that may scare you.

... Read moreStarting college can be both exciting and overwhelming. These three foundational tips—don’t procrastinate, make lists, and say ā€œYesā€ to new opportunities—form a strong framework for success during your academic years. Firstly, avoiding procrastination is critical. Procrastination can lead to stress, poor time management, and lower academic performance. Developing a habit of starting tasks early and breaking large assignments into smaller chunks helps maintain steady progress and reduces last-minute pressure. Techniques such as the Pomodoro Technique, which breaks work into timed intervals with breaks in between, can improve focus and productivity. Secondly, making lists ensures you stay organized and track all your responsibilities. Whether it’s a physical planner, a digital app, or simple sticky notes, listing your assignments, exams, and personal tasks can prevent items from being overlooked. Prioritizing your list each day helps you focus on what’s most important, balancing academics with social activities and self-care. Finally, saying ā€œYesā€ to opportunities, even those that may intimidate you, is essential for personal and professional development. Engaging in clubs, internships, study abroad programs, or leadership roles can build confidence and create memorable, enriching experiences. These experiences often provide valuable skills outside the classroom, such as teamwork, communication, and adaptability. Incorporating these strategies can help freshmen manage the challenges of college life effectively while maximizing learning and growth. Embrace each semester with enthusiasm and organization, and don’t hesitate to step out of your comfort zone—this approach builds a memorable and successful college career.
