Your emotions aren’t the problem

2024/12/14 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! I wanted to share something deeply personal today. For the longest time, I felt like I had a giant wall up when it came to expressing my emotions verbally. It wasn't that I didn't feel things deeply, but actually putting those feelings into words felt impossible, like trying to catch smoke. I always thought my emotions were the problem, but what I’ve truly learned is ignoring them is. Just like the message I saw explains, emotional health isn't about avoiding difficult feelings; it's about understanding them. Before I could even think about speaking my feelings, I had to learn what they *were*. I started asking myself, 'What am I feeling and why?' This simple question really changed things for me. Is it anxiety, anger, or sadness? Recognizing these as signals, not enemies, made them less scary and more manageable. Once I started to understand what was going on inside, the next challenge was how to get it out. I knew bottling emotions leads to burnout, and I definitely experienced that. I realized acknowledging them creates space for healing, but how do you move from acknowledging to *articulating*? Here are some strategies that helped me on my journey: Start Small with Journaling: One of the first steps I took, just like suggested, was journaling. It’s a safe, private space to practice putting words to your feelings without judgment. I'd write down everything, even if it felt messy or incomplete. It helped me find the right vocabulary and structure my thoughts before I had to say them out loud to anyone. Practice with a Safe Person: Then, I slowly worked up to talking to someone I trust. This is crucial. It wasn't about dumping everything on them, but trying to articulate one specific feeling. For example, instead of just saying 'I'm fine,' I'd try, 'I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed today because of X.' This person helped me feel that my emotions are valid and that I deserve my attention when I spoke them aloud. Use 'I' Statements: A game-changer for me was consciously using 'I' statements. Instead of starting with 'You always make me feel...' which can sound accusatory, I shifted to 'I feel [emotion] when [situation] because [reason].' For instance, 'I feel frustrated when our plans change last minute because I value punctuality.' This helps communicate your feelings clearly without making the other person defensive. It's about owning your experience and expressing your truth. Grounding Techniques: Sometimes, when I felt overwhelmed or my voice felt stuck, practicing deep breaths to ground myself helped immensely before I even attempted to speak. It's incredibly difficult to express yourself clearly when your body is in fight-or-flight mode. Taking a few moments to calm my nervous system changed everything. Don't Aim for Perfection: I learned it's not okay to stay there without seeking growth, but growth isn't always perfect or smooth. Sometimes I still stumble over my words, and that's okay. The goal isn't perfect articulation, but authentic communication. Prioritizing your emotional health means giving yourself grace and patience in this process. Every attempt to express yourself, no matter how small, is a step towards a happier, more resilient you.
