Having a new puppy at home can be a whirlwind experience, especially when family members have very different reactions to the new addition. In our case, our mini golden doodle puppy is just 11 weeks old, full of energy and curiosity, which can be overwhelming for a young child like my son. I’ve found that helping children adjust to a new puppy involves lots of patience and gentle guidance. One thing that really helped was setting clear boundaries for both the puppy and my son. We taught him how to interact safely and kindly with the dog, such as not pulling her fur or startling her, which helped avoid frustration on both sides. Meanwhile, the puppy is learning to respect space and calm down when needed, which takes time but is essential for a happy household. I also made sure to spend individual time with my son doing activities he enjoys, so he doesn’t feel like the puppy is taking all the attention away. This balance is crucial when integrating pets into a family with young kids.
