One of my favorite reads of the year 📚

5/5⭐️:

I honestly didn’t expect The Rose Bargain by Sasha Peyton Smith to pull me in the way it did, but wow — I was hooked.

The world feels magical but also dangerous, and the whole idea of making bargains that actually cost you something makes the story so intense. Every decision matters, and you can feel the weight of it. I loved that the magic wasn’t just there to look cool — it had real consequences.

The main character felt real to me. She’s strong, but she makes mistakes and has doubts, which made her easy to root for. And the romance? SO good. It’s definitely a slow burn, and the tension had me flipping pages way too late at night. The chemistry felt natural, not forced, and it didn’t take over the whole plot.

What really made this a five-star read for me is how layered it is. It’s not just fantasy and romance — it’s about ambition, sacrifice, and figuring out who you are when everything is on the line.

If you like dark fantasy with high stakes and romance that makes your heart race a little, this is 100% worth it. I’d absolutely recommend it — and I’m still thinking about it after finishing, which is always a good sign. 🌹

... Read moreReading The Rose Bargain was an immersive experience that reminded me why I love dark fantasy so much. The concept of bargains with real consequences adds a unique tension that few books manage to deliver so effectively. I found myself constantly reflecting on the idea that every choice in life truly comes with a price—a theme that felt surprisingly relatable beyond the pages. One aspect that stood out more than anything was how the magic system contributes directly to the plot's stakes rather than just serving as decoration. The danger lurking beneath the surface gives the story a sharp edge, creating an atmosphere that's both enchanting and suspenseful. The protagonist’s fragility and strength made her journey compelling. Her doubts and mistakes weren't just plot devices; they felt genuine, making it easy to root for her. The romance was refreshingly subtle, a slow-burning connection that brought emotional depth without overshadowing the narrative's complexity. What impressed me further was how the story balances personal ambition with sacrifice, exploring identity in a world where trust is scarce and choices weigh heavily. This layering gives the novel richness that invites multiple reads and conversations. For anyone interested in books that blend fantasy with real emotional stakes and a touch of romance, The Rose Bargain is a fantastic recommendation. It lingers in your mind long after the final page, inspiring both escapism and introspection.

I'd call this a sci-fi/horror read for sure! The synopsis per good reads is: Grieving mother Magos cuts out a piece of her deceased eleven-year-old son Santiago’s lung. Acting on fierce maternal instinct and the dubious logic of an old folktale, she nurtures the lung until it gains sentience
