Thrift Yarn After care

If you’ve ever wondered what to do if you buy thrifted yarn, never fear! Your big sis is here!

Just throw it in the freezer! I know it sounds crazy but doing this simply kills all insects that could be in the yarn 1 but it also illuminates all the smells! Simply remove after a few days and your good. If you want to deep clean them a bit more buy some wool specialty soap and hand wash it in the sink. But let’s be honest, who has time for that??

2025/12/2 Edited to

... Read moreHey fellow yarn lovers! You know that thrill of finding a gorgeous skein of yarn at a thrift store? It's pure magic! But then the little voice in your head pipes up: 'What if it has... *bugs*?' Or, 'Hmm, it smells a bit... *stale*.' Don't worry, I've been there countless times, and I've got your back with my absolute favorite, foolproof method for thrift yarn after care: the freezer! You might be thinking, 'Freezing yarn? Is that even a thing?' Oh, it absolutely is, and it's a game-changer. The primary reason I swear by this trick is to tackle those unwelcome hitchhikers: insects. Thrift stores, by nature, have items from all sorts of homes, and sometimes, little critters like moths or carpet beetles can find their way into natural fibers. Freezing, especially for a sustained period, is incredibly effective at killing adult insects, larvae, and even their eggs. It's a natural, chemical-free way to ensure your new treasure is pest-free before it joins your stash or becomes part of a cherished project. I usually leave my yarn in for at least 72 hours, sometimes a full week, just to be extra sure. Beyond bugs, there's the odor factor. Thrifted items often come with a variety of smells – musty, dusty, sometimes even a faint whiff of someone's old perfume or pet. While freezing won't wash the yarn, it does wonders for neutralizing and diminishing many of these unwanted odors. The cold temperature helps to slow down the molecular activity that causes smells, making them less potent. When you take it out and let it air, you'll notice a significant improvement. It's like pressing a reset button for freshness! So, how do you do it? It's super simple. First, make sure your yarn is completely dry. Then, place your thrifted yarn, whether it's a delicate alpaca blend or a sturdy wool like 'Lamb's Pride Bulky,' into a sealed plastic bag. A Ziploc bag works perfectly, or even a grocery bag tied securely. This protects the yarn from any freezer burn or absorbing smells from your food. Pop it into your freezer, ideally at 0°F (-18°C) or colder, for at least 72 hours. Some people even recommend freezing for a few days, then thawing for a day, and refreezing for another few days to catch any eggs that might hatch in the interim. I typically go for one long freeze, and it’s always worked for me! Once its freezer vacation is over, take the bag out and let the yarn come to room temperature while still inside the bag. This prevents condensation from forming directly on the yarn, which could lead to dampness. After it's fully thawed, you can take it out and give it a sniff and a gentle fluff. Most of the time, it's ready to go! Now, what about washing? The original article mentions hand washing, and yes, that's an option for deeply soiled yarn, but let's be real, who has time for that every time? Freezing is my go-to for general "thrift store funk" and bug prevention. If a skein looks visibly dirty or feels greasy, then a gentle hand wash with a dedicated wool soap (like a no-rinse wool wash) might be in order after its freezer treatment. But for the average thrift store find, focusing on this 'Thrift Yarn After Care' freezing method is efficient, effective, and keeps your precious crafting time focused on actual crafting! Trust me, once you start freezing your thrifted yarn, you'll wonder why you ever did it any other way. It's a small step that makes a huge difference in peace of mind and the quality of your finished projects. Happy crafting!

Do Yarn Types Really Matter in Crochet?
Not all yarn is the same. (Which is why I love it so much!) Acrylic, cotton, wool blends and bamboo all behave differently when you crochet and how you care for your crochet afterwards. There’s no “best” yarn — just the right yarn for the project. 💬 Which yarn do you like working with most?
