It’s certainly not a 4 to 7 km walk from the monastery to this beach; you simply cross the road! This stunning beach, also known as San Jose Creek Beach, is famous for its unique mix of coarse sand and smooth pebbles, and its crystal-clear waters. It's a popular spot for experienced divers, particularly for abalone (when in season and with proper permits, of course!). The underwater terrain here is truly spectacular, making it a favorite for those who know how to navigate its depths. However, it's crucial to understand that Monastery Beach is known for being extremely dangerous for swimmers. The shoreline drops off very steeply, and powerful rip currents are a constant threat. I've always admired its beauty from the shore, taking long walks and capturing photos, but I would never venture into the water for a casual swim. Safety first, always! There are no lifeguards on duty, so it’s essential to be highly cautious if you’re even thinking of getting close to the water's edge. Parking can be a bit tricky, with limited spots available along Highway 1. I usually try to arrive early in the morning to beat the crowds and secure a good spot. The earlier you go, the more serene the experience, and the light for photography is often incredible. You’ll be treated to stunning views of the rugged Big Sur coastline stretching in both directions, truly a sight to behold.
