My Birth Plan vs What Actually Happened 💙

When I was making my birth plan, I was super chill and lenient about pretty much everything. I knew that I wanted what was best for my baby and the drs probably knew more than me. However I was not expecting any of this. A cesarean never even crossed my mind so I was a complete mess. I’ve also never heard of Hellp and never had any problems with my blood pressure during pregnancy so that was a shock too.

Overall, the main thing I prayed directly for was a healthy baby and God delivered! In my struggles He was there. When I didn’t think I could go another hour on the magnesium He strengthened me. I owe all my joy to Him!

... Read moreCreating a birth plan is often seen as a hopeful blueprint for the arrival of a baby, but sometimes reality takes a different turn. When I first drafted my birth plan, I imagined a natural labor starting on its own, an epidural to manage pain, and those special moments like immediate skin-to-skin contact and the dad cutting the cord—all culminating in a short hospital stay. However, my experience taught me that flexibility and resilience are key. I had no previous issues with blood pressure during pregnancy, so when HELLP syndrome was diagnosed, it caught me completely off guard. HELLP syndrome is a severe form of preeclampsia, which affects the liver and blood clotting. Dealing with it meant I had to be induced overnight and eventually required a cesarean section due to the risks involved for both me and my baby. One of the hardest adjustments was that the immediate skin-to-skin bonding I had envisioned was delayed for a few hours because of the surgery and subsequent trembling caused by magnesium sulfate treatment. While magnesium treatment was tough—I sometimes wondered if I could endure another hour—knowing it was critical for my health was reassuring. It was a humbling experience to rely on medical professionals’ expertise while clinging to my faith for strength. Throughout the seven-day hospital stay, I learned how important it is to prepare mentally for things not going according to plan but still focus on what truly matters: the health and safety of my baby. This journey also made me appreciate the importance of support systems—a partner present to cut the cord, doctors vigilant for complications, and a care team that monitored and treated my condition. Though my birth experience wasn’t what I expected, it was a powerful reminder that a birth plan is a guide, not a guarantee. Flexibility, informed decision-making, and hope can help turn unforeseen challenges into moments of joy. For moms navigating similar complications, remember you’re not alone, and sharing your story can provide comfort and insight. Staying educated about conditions like HELLP syndrome and understanding interventions such as induction methods and magnesium treatment can empower you throughout pregnancy and delivery. Ultimately, holding onto your core wish—a healthy baby—can be a source of peace amid uncertainty.
