... Read moreWe're gearing up for our big family adventure to Tokyo, and I've been doing a ton of research, especially on how to tackle that daunting 11-hour flight with our three kids! It's one of those things where you think, "it shouldn't be too bad, right?" but deep down, you know preparation is key. I wanted to share some of my strategies for not just surviving, but actually enjoying the journey, and then what we're planning to do once we land to make Tokyo truly magical for the whole family. Conquering the 11-Hour Flight with 3 Kids: Our Game Plan For a long-haul flight like this, especially with three little ones, I've learned that a solid strategy makes all the difference. My top priority is keeping everyone comfortable and entertained. Seat Selection is Crucial: We're aiming for seats that give us the most flexibility. If possible, bulkhead seats offer a bit more floor space for the kids to stretch out. Otherwise, aisle seats are a must for those frequent bathroom breaks and just to get up and move around a bit. I've heard some parents rave about booking an extra seat for more room, but with three kids, that's a big splurge, so we're focusing on maximizing the space we have. Entertainment Arsenal: An 11-hour flight demands a serious entertainment plan. Tablets loaded with new movies, educational apps, and games are essential. But I also pack a "surprise bag" for each of our 3 kids – small novelty toys, sticker books, coloring pages, or pipe cleaners they haven't seen before. These can buy you precious minutes of quiet time. Don't forget their favorite headphones! Snacks, Snacks, and More Snacks: Airline food can be unpredictable for kids, so I'm bringing a generous supply of their favorite non-perishable snacks. Think fruit pouches, crackers, granola bars, and dried fruit. Hydration is also key, so refillable water bottles are on our packing list. Comfort Items & Sleep Aids: Each of our kids will have their favorite small blanket or stuffed animal. Inflatable neck pillows can make a huge difference for those trying to catch some sleep. We'll also try to encourage sleep during what would be Tokyo's nighttime hours to start adjusting to the new time zone. Managing Jet Lag Onboard and Upon Arrival: My goal is to start the jet lag adjustment on the plane. We'll gently encourage our kids to sleep when it's nighttime in Tokyo and stay awake when it's daytime. Once we land, immediate exposure to daylight and sticking to local meal and sleep times will be our non-negotiable strategy. A little bit of screen time to keep them occupied during the adjustment period is totally okay in my book! Exploring Tokyo for Kids: Our Must-Do List Once we've conquered the flights to Tokyo, the real fun begins! Tokyo is such a vibrant city with so much to offer families. Here’s what’s on our radar for making the most of Tokyo with kids: Iconic Attractions: The Ghibli Museum is at the top of our list, though I know tickets sell out fast, so we're planning far in advance! We're also excited about KidZania Tokyo, which sounds like an amazing interactive experience. For some outdoor fun, we'll definitely visit Ueno Park (home to a zoo and museums) and Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden for some peaceful strolling and playground time. Unique Experiences: I'm particularly keen on teamLab Planets – I've heard it's an incredibly immersive digital art experience that captivates both adults and children. And of course, a visit to a themed cafe (maybe a Pokémon or character cafe) is a must for a fun treat. Navigating with Littles: Tokyo's public transportation system is efficient, but navigating it with three kids and potentially a stroller requires some planning. We'll be using Suica or Pasmo cards for easy travel and trying to avoid peak rush hours. Taxis will be an option for shorter distances when we're tired or have a lot of gear. Kid-Friendly Food: My kids can sometimes be picky eaters, but I'm optimistic about Japanese cuisine! Simple dishes like udon, ramen, tempura, or even convenience store onigiri are usually a hit. We'll also explore the food halls in department stores, which offer a fantastic variety for everyone. General Tips for Family Travel: My biggest takeaway from traveling with kids is to embrace flexibility. Tokyo is bustling, so taking things at a slower pace, scheduling downtime, and not over-planning every minute will be crucial for enjoying the trip. Having a portable Wi-Fi device will also be a lifesaver for navigation and keeping everyone connected. It's an adventure, and I can't wait to share our Tokyo journey with you all!
