• “Stitch”: This one was inspired by me feeling unwell for 2 weeks straight!… laying down with tissues, bc honestly, that’s been the vibe lately. (A vibe I’m tired of fasho!) haha
• “Mood??”: yellow brings warmth, joy, & a little hope. Red is passion and intensity — that spark that makes you feel. And orange, the mix of the two, feels like harmony — vibrant but calm, like a sunset that understands every emotion.
• “Mr. $$$”: idk what it is about this one, but I painted it over five years ago and still find myself coming back to it. Lowkey think I painted my future 🧍♂️😂
What’s your safe space? Painting is mine… It’s where I let my emotions breathe without explaining them. Some days it’s messy, some days it’s magic, but it’s always me.
... Read moreYou know, for me, diving into a canvas with acrylics is more than just painting; it's a journey. When I started, I was a bit intimidated by all the different art supplies, but acrylics are surprisingly forgiving, which makes them perfect for expressing raw emotions. I've found that one of the best things about acrylic paint is how quickly it dries. This allows for easy layering, which is fantastic when you're building up an abstract painting, or even adding details to a cartoon-style painting. No need to wait hours for layers to dry, which is great when inspiration strikes quickly!
If you're looking to start your own creative safe space, I highly recommend grabbing a few basic tubes of acrylic paint – a primary palette is a great start – and a simple canvas. Don't worry too much about fancy brushes at first; a few different sizes will do. I often find myself just letting the colors flow, especially when I'm exploring warm hues of yellow, orange, and red, like in my 'Mood??' piece. There's something so therapeutic about blending those vibrant colors directly on the canvas, watching them transform. Sometimes, I even mix in a little water to create washes, or use the paint thickly straight from the tube for a more impasto effect.
One tip I've learned that really helps when you're using art as an emotional outlet is to not overthink it. Seriously! There have been days when I felt completely overwhelmed, and just putting down some random strokes or colors was enough to start. Sometimes, those messy beginnings turn into the most compelling abstract paintings. Don't be afraid to experiment with texture too; you can use a palette knife or even just a thick brush to create interesting effects that add depth to your feelings on the canvas. It's all about playing and discovering what feels right to you.
And what about those days when you feel stuck? I've been there! Sometimes, I just pick a color that matches my mood – vibrant red for passion, soothing blue for calm – and just start making marks. Or, I'll think of a simple subject, even a character like 'Stitch', and just sketch it out roughly with a light color before adding layers. The key is to just get started.
Cleaning up is also super easy with acrylics, which is a huge plus. Just some soap and water for your brushes, and you're good to go. It makes the whole process feel less daunting, and you don't have to worry about lingering smells like with oils. My safe space isn't just about the finished piece; it's about the act of creating, the quiet moments with my art supplies, and the freedom to express whatever I'm feeling without judgment. Whether it's a detailed character like 'Stitch' or just a splash of color, it's all about allowing yourself that creative release. I hope this inspires you to find your own artistic escape with acrylics!
