... Read moreStarting out as a new grad LPN, especially with two jobs right out of the gate, felt like diving into a whole new world! The excitement was immense, but so were the nerves. One of the best ways I found to channel that nervous energy was by preparing and, of course, shopping for all my nurse essentials. It’s not just about having the right tools; it’s about feeling confident and ready for whatever comes my way. Let's talk scrubs first because, let's be honest, you'll be living in them! Comfort is non-negotiable. I quickly learned that investing in high-quality scrubs makes a huge difference in those long shifts. My absolute favorite right now are these amazing rust-colored scrubs from Mandala. Seriously, they're a game-changer. The fabric is so soft and flexible, allowing for all the bending, stretching, and running around that nursing demands. Plus, the color is vibrant without being over-the-top, and they hold up beautifully after countless washes. When you're choosing your scrubs, think about pockets – you can never have enough! And consider the fit; some brands offer different inseams or styles like joggers versus straight leg, so find what makes you feel best and most mobile. Beyond the uniform, there’s a whole array of gear that becomes an extension of you. A reliable stethoscope is at the top of that list. Mine is a classic blue, and it's been my trusty companion, helping me listen to heartbeats and lung sounds. Don't skimp here; a good stethoscope can make all the difference in your assessments. Then there are the fun, personality-expressing items like badge reels. I picked up one with a hilarious raccoon and the phrase “IT IS WHAT IT IS AND IT IS NOT GREAT.” It’s a small detail, but it always gets a chuckle from colleagues and patients, and it’s a little reminder not to take everything too seriously. It’s a great way to add a touch of yourself to an otherwise sterile environment. And oh, the mighty pen! You’ll quickly realize that pens disappear faster than you can blink on the unit. My secret weapon? A pack of Pilot G-2 gel pens, specifically the 0.38mm black ink. They write so smoothly, and the fine tip is perfect for all the detailed charting and notes you’ll be making. Trust me, having a handful of these in your pocket will save you countless headaches. Finally, for those cooler shifts or just showing off your nursing pride, a cozy nurse-themed sweatshirt is a must. I found a couple I adore – one with a cute goose dressed as a nurse and another with “NURSE” beautifully embroidered in pink and purple. They’re perfect for layering over scrubs in chilly hospital environments or just for lounging after a long day. They also make great conversation starters! Getting ready for your first nursing jobs is an exciting journey. Don't forget to prioritize comfort and practicality, but also allow yourself to pick out a few items that bring you joy. It's all about building your toolkit to not only survive but thrive in your new role. Good luck to all my fellow new grad nurses out there – you’ve got this!
