Finally unpacking 📚

Seeing my beloved book collection finally coming out of boxes and breathing again after the move is such a relief! The original post shows just a glimpse of the unpacking process, but it reminded me of the adventure (and sometimes ordeal!) of actually moving all these books in the first place. Seriously, before you even think about packing a single book, go through your collection. I know, it's hard to part with them, but do you really need that dusty copy you haven't touched in years? I wish I had been more ruthless with my own purge before the move; it would've saved me so much hassle. Identify what truly sparks joy or holds sentimental value, and what you’re likely to reread. For the rest, consider donating, selling, or gifting. When it comes to the actual packing, small, sturdy boxes are non-negotiable. Trust me on this one. Books are incredibly heavy, and trying to fill a large box with them is a recipe for disaster – for your back, for the box, and potentially for your books. I opted for banker boxes and dedicated book boxes. Pack your books flat or spine-down to prevent spine damage. Avoid packing them with the spine facing up, as this can cause the pages to warp and eventually damage the binding. If you have some special editions, like my copy of 'TENDER IS THE FLESH' or 'PUNK 57', wrap them individually in packing paper or even a soft cloth for extra protection. Don't leave empty spaces in your boxes! Books can shift during transit and get damaged. Fill any gaps with crumpled packing paper, old t-shirts, or even small towels. This provides cushioning and prevents movement. I also found it helpful to use some of my softer items, like scarves or linens, to cushion the top and bottom of boxes filled with books. Labeling is absolutely crucial for a smooth unpacking experience. I labeled each box not just with the room it belonged in (e.g., 'Living Room Books' or 'Bedroom'), but also with a brief description of the contents – 'Fiction A-M', 'Reference', 'Paperbacks'. I also made a point to mark boxes with 'OPEN FIRST' that contained books I knew I'd want immediate access to, like my current reads or some comfort rereads. This made finding my essentials so much easier when I just wanted to relax after a long moving day. Moving books is tough, but a little planning goes a long way.
