TEACHER CREATING GOOD TRANSITIONS IN THE CLASSROOM

As a teacher, transitioning in and out of the classroom or between subjects can be challenging at times! Here are some things that I use that my kids love AND makes life easier for me!!🫶🏼

✨Calming time: Every time we come back to the classroom from lunch, recess, specials, or anything else, we take 3 minutes to sit silently and calm our bodies and mind. This works wonders and kids look forward to it. This is a great trauma informed practice as well!

✨TRANSITION TIC-TAC-TOE: kids love to be competitive and play games so why not turn transitions into a game?? If students transition with a 0 voice, follow all of the directions, and are all in their seats by the time I say, they get a letter! It’s motivating and fun!

✨DOORBELL: this is a great way to get you students attention and you can use the sound for transition time as well!

✨last one is a classic! Just count down from 10 and give directions in between your numbers! Example: “ I need you in your seats in 10, voices off in 9, books out in 8….”

Trust me, smooth transitions will make your life easier and save you time!!! Do you guys use anything else you like for transitions?

... Read moreCreating an effective transition in the classroom is crucial for maintaining a productive learning environment. Teachers face unique challenges when shifting between activities or subjects, and implementing structured strategies can significantly enhance student engagement and focus. In this context, approaches such as the Calming Time method help transition students from a high-energy activity to a more focused classroom setting. This period allows students to center themselves, fostering mindfulness and emotional regulation, which is especially valuable in trauma-informed practices. Moreover, gamifying transitions through methods like Transition Tic-Tac-Toe not only motivates students but also instills a sense of competition, encouraging them to adhere to classroom rules in a fun manner. It’s a practical approach that turns what could be a chaotic moment into an interactive challenge, allowing students to earn letters for good behavior, further enhancing classroom management. Additionally, auditory cues like using a doorbell signal can create a clear indication for transitions, consolidating the teacher’s authority and students’ attention. Lastly, a countdown method simplifies the communication of expectations during transitions. For example, counting down from ten provides structured timing while giving instant reminders of behavioral expectations. Incorporating these strategies can lead to smoother transitions, ultimately minimizing disruptions and maximizing classroom time. Teachers are encouraged to share their own successful techniques to build a collaborative environment for others seeking to improve their classroom management skills.
