if you are interested in the nicu as a new grad, here’s why you should try to start in the nicu.
-NICU is the most specialized field. it’s a totally different world from peds and adults. some people may tell you to start in medsurg to build your skills but all of your skills will be thrown out the window when you get to nicu.
- although nicu is a specialty in pediatrics, it’s totally different from the older kids. if working on a pediatric floor is your way of getting your foot in the door to nicu, then i highly suggest that!
- NICUs prefer nurses who they can mold into the kind of nicu nurse they want you to be. starting in a nicu residency is the easiest route to getting into nicu.
- vital signs are completely different from what you learned in nursing school. medication dosages are completely different from adults as well.
- if NICU is what you absolutely want to do after school, GO FOR IT! i promise you won’t regret it!🫶🏾💓
