3 things you need to know about ghostwriting

Ghostwriting: What is it, is it ethical, and who hires them?

🪴1. What is it?

Ghostwriting is when a professional writer creates content (books, blogs, LinkedIn posts) under someone else’s name. It’s YOUR ideas, THEIR expertise.

🪴2. Is it ethical?

Just like any profession, there are exploitative and dishonest people.

In my opinion, my processes are clear and transparent. There is no room for unethical clients in my books.

🪴3. Who hires them?

You’re probably most familiar with celebrity ghostwriters, but that is only 1% of the industry.

I’ve written for business owners, coaches, CEOs, family members, and more.

🌟It’s less about WHO hires ghostwriters and more about WHY they hire them.

Wondering how a ghostwriter could benefit you? Let’s talk!

I have two more spots starting in February for retainer clients and one spot open for a long-term project (think book or digital resource).

... Read moreYou know, when I first started exploring the world of ghostwriting, I had so many questions – not just 'what is it?', but 'how does it actually *work*?' Many people are curious about the mechanics behind someone else's name appearing on content I've tirelessly crafted. It's a fascinating collaboration, and I'd love to pull back the curtain a bit and share my typical ghostwriting process, step-by-step. It's much more than just writing; it's about building trust and bringing someone else's vision to life. My journey with a new client usually kicks off with an initial discovery call. This isn't just a casual chat; it's crucial for understanding their unique needs. We talk about their goals – whether it's a book, blog posts, LinkedIn content, or something else entirely. I try to pinpoint their target audience, their brand voice, and most importantly, why they're seeking a ghostwriter. Often, it boils down to a lack of time, especially for busy professionals like small business owners or CEOs who have brilliant ideas but simply don't have the hours in the day to put them on paper. Or, sometimes, they just genuinely dislike writing, and that's perfectly okay! This initial stage helps me understand their 'why' and ensures we're a good fit. Once we've aligned on the goals, the next phase is content strategy and outlining. This is where we transform raw ideas into a structured plan. For a book, it might mean developing a detailed chapter outline; for blog posts, it could be a content calendar with specific topics and key messages. I'll often conduct additional research to fully immerse myself in their industry and perspective. We collaborate closely here, ensuring every point resonates with their expertise. Getting their approval on this outline is vital, as it becomes our roadmap and prevents misunderstandings later on. This clear communication is a cornerstone of maintaining an ethical ghostwriting relationship. Then comes the exciting part: the drafting phase. With the strategy in hand, I dive into writing. This involves not just putting words on paper, but capturing the client's voice, tone, and unique insights. It's a delicate balance of adopting their persona while infusing professional writing quality. I focus on crafting engaging, well-researched content that truly reflects their message. I might send over sections or chapters as they're completed, allowing for early feedback and ensuring we're always on the right track. Review and revisions are an integral part of the process. I believe in complete transparency, and client feedback is invaluable. After I deliver a draft, they get to review it thoroughly. This isn't about me being defensive; it's about them ensuring the content perfectly represents *them*. They'll provide comments, suggestions, and any necessary tweaks, and then I'll incorporate those revisions. This back-and-forth ensures the final product is exactly what they envisioned, reinforcing the ethical framework where they have full control and final say over the content published under their name. Finally, upon their ultimate approval, we reach final delivery. The content is polished, proofread, and ready for publication. Whether it's a manuscript, a series of articles, or social media posts, it's handed over, ready to make an impact. This entire journey, from that first conversation to the final word, is a partnership built on clear communication, mutual respect, and a shared goal of producing high-quality content that elevates the client's voice and expertise. It's incredibly rewarding to help professionals share their knowledge with the world, even if my name isn't on the byline.

I have been thinking about this recently. I live in a rural area. A coffee on Fridays, I hear people's stories. I think: somebody should be writing these down. For the Community, for their families, just because it idea History.
