There’s just something about high school hallways, college dorms, and classroom anxieties that makes for the perfect horror movie backdrop, right? For me, the start of a new semester is the ideal time to binge-watch some classic and contemporary teen horror. It’s like a ritual! The blend of everyday struggles like fitting in, dealing with crushes, and academic pressure, combined with a slasher, a ghost, or a supernatural entity, just hits different. It's almost cathartic to see characters on screen grappling with fears far worse than pop quizzes. One of my absolute go-to films when I'm in the mood for some back-to-school scares is Happy Death Day. Oh my goodness, if you haven't seen this one, you're missing out! It's a brilliant blend of slasher horror and comedy, with a fantastic time-loop twist, much like Groundhog Day but with a mysterious killer. The main character, Tree Gelbman, is a college student who keeps reliving her birthday, which also happens to be the day she gets murdered by a masked assailant. It's a fun, engaging mystery that keeps you guessing, and the college campus setting makes it the ultimate back-to-school watch. I loved trying to figure out who the killer was alongside Tree, and her character development throughout her endless deaths is surprisingly good. It’s suspenseful, genuinely funny, and has some solid jump scares without being overly gory. Definitely a must-watch for a spooky movie night with friends! Beyond *Happy Death Day*, there’s a whole library of amazing back-to-school horror movies that really set the mood. Of course, you can't talk about high school horror without mentioning Scream. It practically defined the genre for a generation! The mystery, the iconic Ghostface mask, and the meta-commentary on horror tropes make it a timeless classic. Watching Sidney Prescott navigate high school drama while being hunted by a serial killer is just peak suspense. Another gem that always comes to mind is The Faculty. Set in a high school where the teachers are being taken over by parasitic aliens, it perfectly captures the paranoia and distrust among students and authority figures. It’s got a great cast and a fun, sci-fi horror vibe that feels very '90s. And for a truly terrifying and heartbreaking tale of high school bullying gone wrong, Carrie (the original or the remake!) is an absolute classic. The prom night scene is legendary for a reason, showing the devastating consequences of pushing someone too far. Whether you're into slashers, supernatural thrillers, or sci-fi scares, the back-to-school horror subgenre has something for everyone.
