Soo… the Row Machine isn't for Obliques? 🥴
All jokes aside, don't forget to train your Obliques (Side Abs)!!
They're your bodies built-in armor against forces that try to twist, torque, and overload your spine.
This exercise helps to build stability in your core and strengthen it's ability to resist rotational force. Keeping your spine safe and healthy throughout your life!
A strong midsection isn't just about looks, it's about durability, balance, and keeping your body safe under stress. Take care of your obliques and they'll take care of you!
Hey everyone! Building on my last post about why obliques are so crucial, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into how and why I prioritize them in my routine. Like many of you, I used to focus mainly on front abs, but after experiencing some really uncomfortable lower back pain – you know, that sharp twinge when you just turn around too fast – I realized something was missing. That's when I learned about the incredible benefits of training obliques. These aren't just 'side abs' for aesthetic reasons; they're your body's natural protectors. They create a strong, stable midsection that literally acts as armor, preventing your spine from twisting and torquing in ways it shouldn't. This isn't just about weightlifting or intense workouts; it's about making everyday movements safer and more efficient. Think about reaching for something in the back seat of your car, or even just picking up a grocery bag – your obliques are working to keep you safe. You might have seen various 'waist twisting' tools or machines out there, and while some promise quick results, the key is to understand the mechanics of rotational core strength. Instead of just twisting your spine, effective oblique training involves resisting rotation and controlling movement. This is where exercises that engage your obliques to stabilize your core during twists, instead of just passively twisting, come in handy. So, what are some of my go-to's? I love exercises like Russian twists (but make sure your back is straight and you're controlling the movement, not just flailing!), side planks, and bicycle crunches. Even simple standing oblique crunches, where you bring your elbow towards your hip, can make a huge difference. For anyone worried about that nagging lower back pain, really focusing on engaging your obliques during these exercises can be a game-changer. It's all about building that resilient core that protects your spine from unexpected jolts or quick turns. I remember feeling clueless about gym equipment, and honestly, the thought of going back to that sharp lower back pain just from turning around too fast kept me motivated to understand my core better. It's not about being a gym expert; it's about listening to your body and giving it the support it needs. A few minutes dedicated to your obliques each week can genuinely transform how your body feels and moves, making you feel more durable and balanced. Beyond preventing injury, a strong set of obliques contributes to better posture, improved balance, and even more power in rotational sports or activities. So, next time you're planning your workout, don't forget these unsung heroes of your core. They truly take care of you if you take care of them!
